I've thought it would be neat to try some floating styrofoam rafts in the lake, with screen bottoms. And load them with some peat muck from the bog, and water plant debris, then plant greens in them. The foam would keep the plants up out of the water, but they'd have constant wicking available...

There are tiny little brown ones all over my yard. They are about the size of my little fingernail. I love my creepy crawlies!

Got it. Have used one before... but not a lot. I have a healthy respect for all power tools. That's why I won't use it unless hubby is home. I'm sitting here watching a huge tree frog climbing all over the window screen. This guy has a huge belly! I think I'll turn the light on so he can...

Stihl 180, 16" bar, easy start. Looking forward to playing with it. But, I won't use it until hubby is here for safety reasons, so may have to wait until next weekend.

It's been that here this summer. I don't do heat. I so don't do heat. You be careful out working in that heat. It can put you flat on your back before you realize it. I'll take the bone cracking cold over the heat, any day. At least when it's cold, I have the option of putting on more...

I'm starting to be thankful that I live in the frigid nasty cold 9 months of the year north east! B/C if I didn't, I'd be up to my eyeballs playing with AP. I'd hardly ever make it into the house to cook a meal, and housework... well... there are so many things that are so much more fun, like...

I once put a cray fish in my tropical tank. He'd neatly decapitate and eviscerate a fish every night. I'd get up and find a fish neatly cleaned, and looking like it was ready to be rolled in seasoned flour, and fried up for breakfast. Only problem was, it would take a lot of them to make a...

In Guatemala, you couldn't stand still for very long without having little red ants climbing up your legs. They packed quite a bite, but don't think they were fire ants. They were EVERY where. One night, I found a nest of them IN MY BED! My DIL opened up her journal after we got on the plane...

When you plant those collards and broccoli, you better be standing back, and use a very long stick to poke those seeds or seedlings into the ground. Those plants will explode out of the ground, and just might knock you off your feet with that soil and watering regimen!

PC, your concept of switching water between a plant pond and your AP system is intriguing. I got all excited about AP last year, but after doing a lot of reading, and realizing that my northern climate and lack of a true green house stood in the way of doing any more than a little "play around...

I'd definitely NOT put walnut branches or leaves in that water. Walnut has a chemical that is toxic to most plant life. I'm guessing it wouldn't be too fish friendly, either!

Can you do any kind of external support that would provide a frame above them that you could then use to provide them with support?

How exciting. AP is on my bucket list, even if just a small 10 gal. system in my basement to play around with. It gets so cold here that it wouldn't be practical in my small house to attempt much more, but... perhaps when I retire, I can invest some effort into more of a greenhouse/AP system...

I envy you folks with you AP systems. Too cold here. But, when we had some land cleared, I had a couple of bubbling sink holes show up on the front lawn. I'm thinking that, while it makes the lawn a hazard, and we'll not be able to mow it without putting pontoons on the mower, perhaps, we can...

rescueacres: I thought that the roots had to have periods where they weren't immersed in water. How long have you had your 10 gallon set up? Does the foam cover the entire surface area of the tank? I'm assuming that you have an open spot at least for feeding? How much of a fish load in the...

Let me tell you about the time I decided that I could pay for my son's college by raising gold angel fish. Pet stores assured me that they'd take all the babies I could produce, and figuring the fair market value being about $1.25 - 1.50 for nickel sized fish, and I had a prolific breeding...

Ok, folks... you're inciting me to a serious case of envy here. I got all hyped up to start an aquaponic system, but after doing the research, decided it might be a good idea to table it for now because of my zone 4 climate. By the time I got everything cycled and running well, I'd get hit...
