Keeping chickens from eating house? How to discourage chickens from certain areas

Just wanted to update if anyone else was having a similar problem - seems to be working great! We actually ended up using staples to hold the window screen against the foam. It's practically invisible - fingers crossed it holds up. We're about a week in and it's all looking good, with the...

Keeping chickens from eating house? How to discourage chickens from certain areas

Thank you everyone for your ideas! I'm going to try out fixing the existing holes with mortar and then using a clear outdoor glue to stick a small gauge screening over the top of it - it's marketed for keeping squirrels and things out of vent holes so hopefully will hold up enough to chickens. I...

Keeping chickens from eating house? How to discourage chickens from certain areas

Honestly, I think that they're picking at the area under the shingles because the concrete 'paint' coating doesn't extend perfectly all the way up - since it was painted by a person there's some imperfections up under the edge of the shingles (at chicken eye level) and there's exposed styrofoam.

Thank you! That would be a great longer term solution. Kind of hoping for something relatively cheap for now. :) Also not sure it would mount well over the styrofoam.

Sadly that would be a LOT of bricks! I calculated I need about 160ft of coverage around the edge of the house. And the house is on a hill, so some places the gap is 4 inches, other places more like 6-8".

Keeping chickens from eating house? How to discourage chickens from certain areas

Apparently it's the best treat in the world! Unfortunately our yard surrounds our house on all sides, so it's either fence the whole house (including under all the doors), fence in the chickens, or keep them from eating apparently the best food in the world.

I'm actually not sure I can screw anything into the styrofoam - should be a block of concrete under there, not sure if they literally glued the sheet styrofoam to the concrete. Maybe I just put the world's shortest 4 inch fence all the way around my house with chopstick fence posts?? :p

Maybe even something like this? https://www.homedepot.com/p/Saint-Gobain-ADFORS-8-in-x-100-ft-Charcoal-Fiberglass-Vent-Mesh-FCS9592-M/202091895

Keeping chickens from eating house? How to discourage chickens from certain areas

I doubt anyone has ever had reason to test it, but would chickens be able to peck through aluminum or fiberglass window screen?

Keeping chickens from eating house? How to discourage chickens from certain areas

If only there was some sort of taste deterrent for styrofoam or something! Why in the world do they think it's so tasty???

I'll definitely look into it! And since I only need a 4-6" strip a roll should go a decently long way. I guess I'd just glue it into place? Hmm, I'll have to think more about that. We didn't even realize it wasn't 'real' concrete until we chipped it with the weedwhacker. Who knew it was a thing?

Or maybe something like window screen? I guess it doesn't even need to be particularly strong. Just keep chickens from pecking through it easily, not look too horrible, and not be a barrier to keep moisture behind it or let bugs live there.

Keeping chickens from eating house? How to discourage chickens from certain areas

She's teaching my two new BOs her styrofoam pecking ways, unfortunately! They have a whole acre of things to peck, but clearly eating the house is more fun. At least it's just insulation foam and not structural or anything, I guess. :idunno I thought about this, but would even hardware cloth be...

Keeping chickens from eating house? How to discourage chickens from certain areas

Apparently it's not super uncommon for concrete slab foundations.... and I was reading that you don't want to cover it with something solid (like wood boards) for exactly the same reason you don't apply house siding all the way to the ground -...

Keeping chickens from eating house? How to discourage chickens from certain areas

Here's the area I'm talking about - it extends all the way around the house. Some of it is over dirt and some of it is over asphalt (driveway area). It's the area between the ground and where the siding ends. You can see a blue spot below where a chicken pecked a hole. And...

Keeping chickens from eating house? How to discourage chickens from certain areas

I realize the obvious answer to this is fencing a dedicated chicken run, but I'm wondering if anyone has any other ideas. The concrete foundation of my house is covered with sheet styrofoam insulation, painted over with a concrete-like coating. Unfortunately, the chickens have realized that it...
