Think it's too cold for your chickens? Think again...

Quote: =========== Colorado Plains here... about 1 hour southeast of Denver. Dipped to negative 18 or 19 last night, is neg 8 right now, and expected to maybe get to zero to 5 degrees today. Had to bring in 2 of my chickens because only 2 in that little pen, they didn't have enough protection...

Think it's too cold for your chickens? Think again...

Quote: Here in Mn we have to worry about the hot weather too. Last year we were very nervous about the 105 temps we had for a week. Course I think you guys down south have to worry about it a lot more. My birds were fine but many around me had dead birds from the heat...

Quote: I wonder too... I was pulling out my hair with our -20 something. I actually widened the driveway today and wasn't cold! The ducks are now laying- I think they have decided spring is here with all this heat And I let the kids play outside for more than 10 minutes after school! I...

Here in Mn we are experiencing a heat wave It has been above 0. All my birds have survived the -20 to -30's and have lived to lay eggs the other day I found 15 chicken eggs and finally the first duck egg!

Think it's too cold for your chickens? Think again...

I just tried to freeze my fingers off by attacking all the roosters with vasoline. And I am still attempting to get by tonight -11 when I went out predicting -20 by morning, without heat (although DH tried to convince me of a heat lamp). I wish everyone luck and am hoping for the best here in...

Think it's too cold for your chickens? Think again...

Quote: Do I think they are happy- To be honest except for the frostbite on my roosters they do look happy. I don't want them to be cold- trust me I don't but I also don't want to have a barn fire that the heat lamp might cause. Cooked birds would not be a good thing either. I end up giving...

Think it's too cold for your chickens? Think again...

Even with the negative numbers creeping in -10 at noon haven't dared to look since... I have resisted the urge to add heat. I have a few roosters who are frost bitten and look terrible and am trying to figure out how to keep the eggs from getting frozen plus because of all the frozen cracked...

Think it's too cold for your chickens? Think again...

I held out and did not heat the coop. Still might cold but the super cold snap that they predicted has been pushed back. We will see it has gotten so that I don't look at the weather anymore if we are going to get more snow I don't want to know about it and I don't think I want to know about...

Think it's too cold for your chickens? Think again...

Quote: We had a bit of -20 but they are talking -30 and -40 somehow that goes over my level for the chickens/ducks. (ok -20 I was questioning myself) I think I will be throwing down more straw and just make sure they have a fluffy layer to bed down in and hope for the best. I may even go...

Think it's too cold for your chickens? Think again...

I have no pictures - but think of a big old barn. Not insulated. They sleep in the front part that had calves in it. During the day they hang out in the milking parlor and I water them in the back of that part. There is a door in between that I close on cold days/nights. So I believe the...

Think it's too cold for your chickens? Think again...

I am now doubting myself- or at least trying to figure out if I need to make the coop smaller for the cold snap they say we are getting next weekend. - 30 or possibly -40 DH has told me he wants to try and give them heat as he thinks they will be dead birds if we don't do something. I...

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain : Quote: Minnesota is one of the few states I will listen to for advice on cold weather. You guys get colder'n us sometimes!! I have two pens of ducks... I've learned that small containers filled a few times a day is much easier all around. The boys call them yuck-ducks...

I am new to chickens and now ducks but don't plan on heating them... Right now I carry 2 5 gal buckets of hot water out there- ducks go through a LOT of water. Glad to see I am not the only one shaking my head at heating the coop- even from Mn where it Will get cold.
