Black tailed buff. The rooster looks like he may be a color cross as it's not quite right for a buff. Most likely the chicks will be buff, but if dad has other colors in his background... I no longer raise Japanese, so it's possible I am wrong about the rooster.

I used to live in WI and now TN. It's really not that hard to avoid frostbite; even with free range. My serama are housed in a homemade solar home (south side of the coop is completely open to sunlight) made of heavy plastic sheeting. Rarely does it get to the freezing point. The hens raise...

Your birds look great; as does the pen. I envy your green grass. Not much of that here. Sure wish spring were here. I find winters long and tedious.

Wart-a serama that shows his Japanese bantam heritage. A poor picture-his colors are much more vibrant and the tail is lacking his normal look, but he is as your description asks for.

At 8 weeks of age they will continue to grow and gain weight. Mine started laying at 5 months and gained in weight even after that.

Not everyone else... I have read posts similar to yours-hens not laying. Factors that effect egg laying are diet, hours of light, temperature, health, and being secure. My guess is that as the days get longer for spring your hens will start laying. Try to be patient and good luck.

Hopefully spring will make the difference for you. I do not know about others, but mine started to lay before they reached 6 months of age.

Looks overweight, but when you handle her is she actually underweight? I tried to make the picture bigger, but was unable to do so. The hens eyes, are they bright and round-compare with your other hens. Parasites-lice, ticks, and worms? Especially internal parasitic worms-has she been wormed...

Check her weight, breathing, runny poo, and any signs of sickness. Possibly molting? A picture may help BYC members to be more helpful in determining what may be wrong. Was she laying eggs? Check vent for swelling and discoloration. Egg binding and intestinal infections, as well as many other...

Is she laying eggs? Could she be broody? Post a picture if you can. Yes, I would worry.

For the second time I've put some Japanese eggs under a brooding serama. I lost the first clutch when the hen deserted her nest just before hatching; she is no longer part of my flock. After this I'll leave the Japanese eggs in the nest and let the Japanese hen brood and hatch them. An excellent...

Yes, they could be. They also could be serama. Chicks change so much as they grow. T^hey might turnout to be a completely different breed.

Beautiful! I sure wish my hen looked like that. She is sadly lacking, but I think I will let her brood her own eggs this time around. The rooster I have is a beauty so just maybe...
