We have found the same thing, except that we have not had to remove any predators. The fox and some raccoons came back for about a week, several times each night, only to be thwarted by the new electric fence (we set several traps, but didn't get anything in them this time). We've had...

I'd be willing to concede a possibility of the owls (but if so, not enough of them to keep the raccoons in check), but I've lived within 5 miles of this same area for 30 years, and have never even heard of a coyote sighting. But an hour or so north at my mom's lake house, you better...

Oh, I have no doubt they're present somewhere in our county! And any other county, for that matter. They're just not present where I live. We're in one of those odd "semi-rural" areas. We're surrounded on all four sides by neighbors with small acreage (like 5 acres each), and there...
Oh, I know. And I should mention that what our permit allows is depredation at night. The way it was explained to us, we can do "whatever [we] need to do" during daylight hours, but the permit was required to legally "hunt" these predators at night.
Does that make sense?

Both coyotes and owls (especially great horned owls) are predators of raccoons.
We have neither of those. Honestly--there is nothing here that preys on raccoons. Nothing. That leaves them free to reproduce as much as can be supported by raiding local homes. They were a huge problem...
midget: Have you checked with your state's version of Game & Fish Commission (or whoever oversees hunting)?
It's illegal for us to kill or relocate, too. BUT, when we contacted the G&F, they took our info, then assigned a individual caseworker (for lack of a better term) to us. That person...
Exactly. We learned a lot when we contacted our state's Game & Fish Commission. We now have a depredation permit so that we may legally deal with predators such as fox and raccoons.
I definitely don't fall into the "SSS" camp, but I'm not so naive as to believe we can "all just get along,"...
Rainman--Wow, it's not often that someone posts something that makes me consider something from a whole new perspective. It's actually never occurred to me that for medium-size predators like raccoons, 'possum, and fox, there really is no natural predator around where we live!
We missed ONE...
I'm considering starting to leave a dog out nights to patrol for raccoons, 'possum, and fox, our problem predators.
I'm sorry to say that I have very little sympathy for the raccoons, because they're not just after our chickens--they make our lives miserable this time of year when they're...
