Conversion of "3 sides totally open" aviary to a "good for chickens" coop.

I do hear that rats are very cautious while mice will literally eat right next to the dead body of their brother/sister. So who knows!

Not me. Unless it was the super old stuff that has been out for ages. I have a couple bait boxes that have not been touched in a loooooong time. I am just guessing. Or they moved on to greener pastures across the street or something.

Need to go check this morning, but the game camera has been recording no activity the past few days. I think they might have eaten some poison after the flurry of activity I had a while back. It went from tons of mice and rats on camera, to literally nothing. Other than catching that squirrel.

Felt crafty, so I made some "weasel boxes" for a couple of the rat traps. I figure at the very least it will keep the bait dry and allow for wider variety in bait options. Makes it harder to see if it has caught anything, but that is ok. Bait goes in the back, not on the trap.

Yeah, totally. I was wearing some rubber muck boots and using the back end of a claw hammer to open the trap, so maybe I knew something was funky before it happened. I don't like my hands that close to any vermin. I guess that is the one redeeming feature of the black plastic "alligator"...

Also, no camera activity or sprung traps this morning. Activity has died way back. May be due to sudden appearance of so many new traps. Haha.

Yeah. Classic wooden rat trap, caught by the neck as you would normally see. He played dead till I let him loose. Then he started his escape. Surprised me! Those rat sized traps have some force.... As for type of squirrel, apparently some sort of robot that doesn't die. Western grey would be...

Conversion of "3 sides totally open" aviary to a "good for chickens" coop.

As for the rat/mouse trap results from last night, nothing caught on camera, but one squirrel caught by the neck in one of the wooden rat traps after the camera stopped recording for the night. He was surprisingly still alive when I found him. I think it might have been a recent catch. Not...

Got 4 eggs this morning, all good size. Then when I went out a bit ago (about 7 PM), found this sad guy in the nest box. Really well formed membrane and not leaky.

Rat traps came in and they have yellow paddle type triggers. Right size to wedge a sunflower seed into, so that is nice. Still stuck a thin dab of peanut butter on the very edge, where the least amount of force or movement would trigger the trap (mechanics of a lever, etc..). Results from...

I don't have any of that devil's lettuce in my house! Haha. Just never got around to buying any scratch, nothing really against it. My regular feed is basically rough ground grains, but that is as close as I can get and none of the pieces would be large enough to wedge. I'll see how tonight...

I have also experienced the traps that "walk away". Found a mummy rat crammed into a burrow after we cleared some ivy. Guess he couldn't make it home with the trap stuck on him. So I have been tying mine with a bit of twine to a brick or the wire of my run, etc.. Have not seen the mouse trap...

Yep. I bought the 2 pack of white logs on Amazon. I did not want to ruin a bucket by drilling unless I needed to, and that was one of the few product that hung from the rim instead of needing to be drilled. I laughed when it came since the hangers are clearly just some fence staples that they...

Still finding on average one soft shelled and leaky egg on the poop board every morning. Sometimes two. Trying no to worry! Averaging 3 "good" eggs per day, all in the brown spectrum. Which means my blue/green ladies are taking a break after laying a couple good ones. Also have not seen a...

Someone dropped one on the poop board overnight. Looks about the same color as the first one. It seems to have a couple layers to it and is soft/leaky. Ohh well. Someone is working out their system.

Can they go broody when they first come into lay? Geeeeeeez. I went out there and she was still all nestled down in her leaf pit. I tried to nudge her and she gave me a death glare. I kept poking and she eventually moved over, but started an angry growl/yell/cluck over and over like I was...

After letting the ladies free range in the backyard for a bit, I herded them back into their run. I keep counting only 9, when there should be 10. Found number 10 sitting on a "nest" right where I found the first egg. Did not seem to want to move from her spot. I am going to go out in an...

Thanks. No eggs this morning, but lots of digging all over the coop floor and run making little nests and generally causing trouble (makes it harder for me to open my coop door when they pile a foot of bedding in front of it). So they are getting close.

First egg. Well formed for shape and size, and almost a bit rough with extra calcium. No complaints there! Most of my ladies will lay brown eggs, so I don't know who this came from. Could be anyone....even the Cuckoo Marans if they start out with light brown before they darken with time...
