I'd like to know exactly what type of mite you are seeing. It's rare for them to get that out of control. Mine are northern fowl mites and on my chickens, they only hang out around their butts. Untreated, they will suck the life out of your chickens and cause huge scabby sores. The feathers...

Quote: Mite definitely crawl on humans. If I pick up an infested chicken to treat her, they all run everyway including up my arm! A horror story: I once laid down my eye glasses on the edge of a trailer while I was treating chickens. I had forgotten that I put some of the infected...

Sorry another reply to an older post. I am catching up today! :-) Quote: If there are enough mites on a chicken and you don't remove them, a chicken will die of anemia. So you have to be very observant.

Best way to find out If the tiny Northern/Chicken mites are in your hair, sleep on a white pillow and in the morning, check it to see if there are any specks on it. If you are infected (and I was, once!) you will see the brown or red specks that are actually mite poop and also your blood...

Turn them over and look around the vent area. It should be clean with healthy looking feathers. Mites make my chicken's bottoms look dark colored and if it's bad, they make sores, too. Look real close and you can see them moving.

I was skeptical about DE but at the point I'm at now I was ready to try everything and anything. I now know for certain that if used in large quantities, DE will clear out the mites. And the good thing is, you're right, it's worming them at the same time. It can even be mixed in their water...

I am a fan of Sevin dust, too. But since the govenment stopped letting us by it in bulk here, it's impossible to use in a large covered walk-in chicken yard like mine. I changed the straw in all the nest this week and put sevin in the bottom. But I believe I also have the yard mites under...

To Farmer Boy: I'd love to have some wood ashes to put out and I've even asked around but I can't find any. We don't have a fireplace except in hubby's barn/man cave and he rarely uses it. I'd even buy some if I could find a place that sells it. Thanks

Update: I got my Nu Stock ordered..2 tubes and my chickens are ready for some for their little irritated butts. Also got a large bag 50# of DE to spread around and a hose sprayer and 2 huge bottles of blue Dawn. I'm ready for battle. Do you think it matters how much Dawn I use? Should I get...

Thanks, but I'm not afraid of them, just find it embarressing to go to the drugs store and have to buy head lice shampoo. As I said I don't have a problem keeping them off my flock, I just need to treat the ground where they live. If I could find some wood ash, I'd dump a load of it and...

Thank you, that was very informative. Finding some wood ash is going to be my next project.

I have no problem treating each bird with ivermectin but it's the ones on the ground and in the coops and on the roosts that have to go. Has anybody ever sprayed liquid sevin on their chicken yards? Please tell me more about wood ash. I'd like to try that. Nustock probably wouldn't be much...

I am fighting mites on my bantams. I put drops of ivermectin on their behinds but as you know this only stops them for awhile because the mites are waiting patiently on the ground for their blood source to taste good again. At this point I want to dust my entire enclosed chicken yard which is...
