UPDATE: Success!
Since my last post we have not had one rat. We've gone back to our original method of feeding but can reevaluate that if we see the problem again.
We had a major infestation. They were scurrying around the run all day (babies and big ones). We saw them weaving around the...
Well, I don't have cats but I do have poison and I haven't seen one rat since they took the bait about 4 days ago. I found one dead one but the others have just "disappeared". I think I may still have one big one that can't fit through the hardware cloth I haven't seen him, but it doesn't...
UPDATE:
So we fed the girls wet food today and took it up after they finished. As soon as there was nothing left we saw the rats eating the bait. Maybe I'm a bit sadistic but few things have felt as satisfying as seeing them eat that stuff! I'll keep eyes out for dead ones although I've read...
I will look into getting a feeder that they can't make such a mess with. In the mean time I am going to try feeding them twice daily with wet food until we get the problem under control. I forgot to attach the picture above so I'll do it here. I've never given them wet food. Can I just wet...

I will buy more bait stations and place them around the perimeter of the areas where we see the...
SO, the original "nest" was under an air conditioning unit that was near the run. The coop is completely enclosed in the run. At this point I'm not sure where their main "hidey holes" are because in spite of not preventing them from getting in, we have disturbed their routine. I have seen...
Thanks for all the advice. I will try wetting the food and look into a new rodent proof feeder. @oldhenlikesdogs I have a bait station that came with the bricks I bought. I just wasn't sure where to put it. It's this one:
Is it safe to put in the same area as the chickens? The box says...
So we've been struggling with rats lately. We tried live trapping, laid TONS of hardware cloth and more. We've had an exterminator out who put poison outside of the chicken's access and only found one dead baby rat. Please don't send me anti-poison msgs. I have young kids playing in the yard...
