The injured Delaware hen began laying again!! . I guess this means she is fully recovered. Her eggs were tiny at first, but the 3rd one was normal size. See the attached pic. My thanks to all who provided answers and comments to this thread.
The injured white Delaware hen appears to have recovered. I see no exposed skin and she was out in the yard with the other chickens. I am glad of this, for I was worried about her. My thanks to the many who took their time to provide advice and information.
When I go into the chicken yard, he stays close to me without being threatening. Frequently he will also flap his wings. But he does have a meanacing quality about him that the girls do not.
Some one mentioned that his spurs seem sharp and may injure the hens during mating. Don’t know what...
I tried to catch her this morning before she left the coop. But when I went in through the egg boxes she retreated to the other side. It is too far to reach. But I saw her up close. It appears no redness anywhere on her skin. Her feathers looked in good shape. This afternoon she was with...
I feed them layers crumbles and scratch. Also table scraps including eggs once a week. They wont touch cracked corn or layers pellets at all, they seem so fussy in that regards.
Yes, she is eating and drinking well. But her behavior has changed since she put her head into that cable tie. Before, she was the first to push her way to the chicken feeder when I replenished it. She seemed super aggressive and would approach me boldly whenever I entered the yard. Now, she...
She is still alive, and seems to be doing OK, but still seems more frail and stressed than she used to be. I think I was premature to say she was bossing the other hens. As far as I don't understand how people just grab their chickens for examination, since I usually can not get close to them...
Today I was very happy to see her recovering rapidly. How do I know? The redness of her back of neck injury had faded to only pink. Also, she was bossing the other hens and chasing them from the food!
Thanks for asking! She seems a little better. It's raining all day, so most of the birds stayed under shelter and I stayed out of the barnyard because it is so muddy. When I brought them some food, she was there and seemed active enough. I think she is improving.
I can not take a really...
Just to be clear, I did not place a zip tie around her neck! I found it already there. I am not certain how she got it there, but she obviously put her head into one that was already zipped. It was about 5 inches in diameter in size
I noticed my Delaware hen was acting different. She was always one of the alpha hens, bold and aggressive in claiming her share of food. She apparently put her head through a large closed cable tie, and couldn’t get it off. The friction appears to have rubbed off some neck feathers, and...
