Rooster behavior quirk or illness - please advise

Yeah, it just never dawned on me that it might cause issues. I can't say that I noticed him being clumsy compared to the hens, since the only time I noticed anyone clumsy was when they tried to get on a roost and aimed wrong and fell down. I bet it also explains why he can be somewhat of a...

Just an interesting update... Today I realized that my Polish rooster probably is not mentally handicapped or what not. He broke/messed up his back toe months and months ago... I forgot about it. But, it seems to be exactly the reason why he loses his balance- the toe is twisted so that the nail...

It did a bit... Back on it... :) Going hungry... you took them from the food, you mean? And how interesting that she will actively seduce... I know Chooks4Life mentioned that as well... so different than my birds to date. I wonder if I will ever have one like this... only time will tell. :)

Just wanted to get a quick reply regarding the rooster... I did get a chance to pick him up yesterday...He feels fine in regards to weight and such. So it is most likely as you said- genetic. I am getting my dog crate back in the next few days, so I can get his feathers growing back in. Maybe...

That it too bad on the young man... I have often wondered about restrictive religions like that. My thoughts on animals choosing their own mates are like yours- they frequently do a better job than we do. Take mixed breed dogs for example- frequently they don't get any of the issues that the...

I can always count on you for great answers! :) As for looking for things like this in humans.. I agree it does bring about feelings that frequently get those of us who voice a minority thought or opinion, we get bashed usually... so I don't frequently go there on public forums. :) But I...

Yep. This is exactly what I plan to do as soon as I figure out the crate situation. I have a massive dog crate that will work perfectly... except it is currently being borrowed by a friend to potty train their puppy.. so if I can't get it or another soon, guess it will have to wait a bit! :) And...

I can separate him now, I was waiting for the weather to warm up, since it would just be a dog crate, placed either in a dark stall away from the flock, or in the run with the flockmates. I could also put the crate on the floor inside the coop at night so they are both closer. He isn't the most...

I think it is most likely trauma induced due to pecking. As I also have a Polish hen from the same family, so therefore from the same hatchery.. she has no odd neurological issues, though she has been pecked as well, I don't think it was ever as bad, since she wasn't a young rooster previously...

Yes, that job sounds good. My boy would get fired so quick tho! He sees a human coming and heads for the hills... but frequently forgets there is a fence between him and said hills... ouch! I was wondering if he could do that with the sock... hence the yarmulke thoughts, but like you pointed...

Holy crud!! You were serious on the turban head! lol I have been considering and half joking about making my boy change religions as well.. but hadn't gotten to the specifics of how to keep it attached... A turban specifically I hadn't thought of... Considered a yarmulke... but figured he would...

Hello all! Reviving the thread a bit... I was the one in it with the Polish rooster who gets his crest pecked regularly by his hens... then he started a wattle shake when he would drink. I thought it was due to the super cold weather and water freezing his comb... I am now coming back to say I...

Yes, I agree that culling definitely has its place... unfortunately I don't think we will be doing it for this issue any time soon. Especially since the hens had more place than the rooster initially, lol. I am thinking in the spring I will take him and the other Polish hen I expect to have by...

Who knows! Your guy definitely sounds like he has some issues... I think I will stick with my estimation of my rooster's issue for the time being, but definitely will keep your guys' thoughts in the back of my mind for possible future issues. :) I too didn't realize how much little chickens can...

Haha~ yeah, I think you were trying to help me figure out how to stop the plucking months ago.... nothing has worked! I got over an inch of great growth by being diligent, checking him 2 times per day to lotion or spray his head, and then voila I go look a couple hours after the morning check...

You think so? I never even suspected that. He hadn't had any extra bad damage/pecks at the time he shook. And he quit nearly immediately as soon as I put Vaseline on his wattles. Nor does he do it when the weather is warmer. And it was also after he got a drink. I had done a google search on...

A totally different take on the problem: What if he just has cold wattles? I am a chicken newbie, since spring last year but... My almost year old Polish crested rooster has never made weird movements, and then when it got pretty darn cold (below freezing), started doing a massive head shake...
