    "Mild" to me is where the part of beak is offset, but top and bottom still meet for the majority of the length - if it's really mild you might only see it head-on. "Severe" would be cases where two halves are almost perpendicular to one another. Crossbeaks can fall anywhere between those extremes.

    How severe is the crossbeak? If it's fairly mild it may be more difficult (so you'll want to keep an eye on her), but they can learn to use a nipple waterer. If it's a more severe case it may be too difficult for her to use a nipple, especially horizontal.
