That should help it last longer, cover the floor well so the chicks can't peck it directly, even some paper towels/newspaper would help it absorb
Did you get your setup done? Pics of chicks after you get them? Another idea could be a bird or guinea pig(might need to add screen/wire cloth...
Link for that heat cave with pics and instructions. =) You can use a reptile heat pad in place of the $40 amazon one mentioned.

Still soaks in. I'd coat it with diatomaceous earth(for odor), then pine pellets(more absorbant), then shavings. That's what I do in my storage tub brooders
Only thing I didn't like is all the bedding/poop that ends up in those. I zip or wire tie quart or half gallon jugs(with nipples in bottom) to sides of whatever I'm using. Wire over top would be fine, probably not needed til a couple weeks old.

Make sure water height is right. In my experience chickens...
For 3 I would definitely recommend a $5-10 storage tub, a few $2 waterbottles I had some from using with my parrots/hamsters (or half gallon jug with chicken nipple). Best thing I ever did was quit using waterbowls, chicks take right to shiny water bottle nipples. $10-$18 heat pad from any pet...
Plastic storage tub(heavy duty as mentioned if you will be doing this a few times. Easy to clean/sanitize. Have 2 if possible so you can swap them out easily. I have mine next to a solid steel utility shelf my lamp is mounted & wire tired on.
But really I agree a heat mat(saves money in the...
