I am collecting eggs to do a fertility test. An elderly lady neighbor friend of Cetawin's who raised up a very beloved son of Isaac lost him yesterday to an unexpected raccoon attack and she is devastated. He was her big old baby, just like his daddy is mine. She desperately wants to see if she...
Another warm day, following a week of wild weather, including a tornado and 4" of snow. I was a bit daring and even let my late Suede's hens out with Isaac and the main flock. No one messes with the huge Orp girls more than once, then they go their separate ways, lol. Isaac flirts with the...
Yes, we have two night lights, one in each section, one really dim LED and one is a 7 watt incandescent, which is really too bright. They also have windows so if there is any moonlight, they can see by that, too. We usually have to keep the 7 watt turned off because they'll sometimes party half...
Thank you! Yes, Isaac is a Delaware. He's a huge baby sometimes. He was even tugging at DH's jeans the other day, asking to be picked up when the hens were getting attention.
A little story for you: The other night, I heard them start eating at midnight over the baby monitor in the coop and...
Yes, that is a picture of Tiny up on the deck in the first post, by herself. That's where she usually goes when she "free ranges". She camps out on the welcome mat and waits for the humans to come give her treats. She can't see to catch bugs or pick up seeds so free ranging doesn't hold much...
Most of this particular flock is in the 3-5 year old range. I have another coop with 4 hens who were my blue Orp, Suede's girls, and another section of that same coop houses six other old hens in it, plus the bantam coop.
This main flock consists of 17 hens plus Isaac at the moment. He used to...
Thanks for the compliments on Dru. She is the daughter of Dottie and Rex, if you remember Rex. I let a friend take him as his breeding rooster when I was trying to simplify things around here awhile back. He was amazing, but sadly, was killed by a poisonous snake while out on range months later...
Just for your enjoyment, some pics of my main flock free ranging in today's very warm (almost 70*) breezy weather. Isaac, my last remaining standard size rooster, will turn 4 years old next month, so no idea how much longer we'll have that sweet big guy. He's a real gem.
