RATS!! too smart to get caught, help!

So we've decided to endure the situation for the winter, no matter what we do the coop will still be overrun with both rats and mice as it is 100+ years old rotten piece of crap built on sand, surrounded by junkyard (heaps of rocks, wood, building materials, cement chunks, bushes, etc) and...

RATS!! too smart to get caught, help!

I've been scouring freecycle, craigslist and all local online ads for free building supplies, to no avail. That's what you get when you live in the boonies... I need to make friends with some farmers and scrapyard owners!!

I bought a new kind of trap today, hope it works http://www.tomcatbrand.com/javascripts/tiny_mce/file_uploads/RatSnapE.jpg it,s baited and set near the entrance of one of their entry tunnels, also set out more bromone poison pellets. Also decided to build a new, raised off the ground plywood...

We are using a product called Bromone... it comes in pellet form. It is a "Fast-acting, single feed rodenticide. Effective on Warfarin-resistant rats" If only the rats will eat it! In addition to putting it out in dishes, I will coat some pellets with peanut butter and smear the rat traps!!

No, I am not sure... but there ARE plenty of mice around, I've seen the droppings and the former owner told me her chickens used to kill mice sometimes in the coop (we've been here for only 4 months). Maybe the rats moved in and took over?

You all have such amazing ideas and it seems many methods work, so that's awesome! I have yet to see a dead rat (body) so it's frustrating... something's eating the poisoned bait and I think it's mice, hey any dead rodent is a good rodent but it's the rats that I really want to get as they are...

OK, good to know!! The coop is unfortunately a 100+ year old crappy building with swiss-cheese weathered wood surrounded by bush, vines and trees... we don't have the money to tear it down, haul it away and rebuild to modern specifications... we can only patch it up as a temporary solution and...

RATS!! too smart to get caught, help!

The problem I have is that I can only get to my coop around 10am in the mornings, and they do most of their laying, eating and drinking from 3:30am onwards (I have a timer light on for them since they put themselves to be at 4pm these days!). I don't want them thirsty or hungry for half the time...

No worries, I did mean wire mesh... my contractor told me what to get, comes in 2' x 8' pieces that we can cut in half. The chicken wire is for inside pens, doors and such. I'd rather eradicate the vermin though

I have a tall slippery trash can... and chicken scratch... I'll have to give that a try!! Thank you! So poison, traps and the garbage can... and then fill the garbage can with water, hold their heads under water with a net until they drown??

That's a good point - thank you! I have to buy a few rolls of chicken wire anyways, what's one more... *shakes fist at stupid expensive vermin*

I'll keep putting out the poison pellets AND re-engineered rat traps with "irresistable" bait and hope to catch a few... They drive me crazy! Next week we start work on updating, insulating and rat-proofing our 2nd chicken coop which has been used as a storage shed for decades, hopefully with...

RATS!! too smart to get caught, help!

We have a rat issue in & around the coop. I know, because I caught one red-handed IN the coop, stealing food - tried to whack it with a piece of wood but it escaped. They are digging enormous holes everywhere, trying to burrough their way into the coop. I bought two of those big Victor Rat...
