First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

@getaclue Yes. Ones that I didn't kill with too hot brooder... 1 two week old Ameraucana with respiratory issues, 1 Cochin and 1 Wyandotte both with lethargy both youngest...less than 2 weeks old.

First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

I'm very good at buying everything. You should see my chicken first aid kit (and my coop). :D The feed store is not as close as I'd like, but I can figure out something at home in the short term. The first one he wailed and wailed over it. The second one he was sad but kind of like "oh...

First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

All their poop seemed relatively consistent. They've been indoors since they arrived - so doubtful any spores. I don't even have indoor house plants. Sounds like we need to do a much more thorough cleaning out of the brooder. The whole mail-a-chick thing still amazes me.

First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

I'm going to order the grit now... any particular brand recommendation? I'm looking on Amazon. With probiotics? Without? Or should I just dig up a chunk of grass from my yard and give to them with the soil?

First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

Thank you - so I'm learning firsthand. My 8 year old son is learning too...trying to help him understand that sometimes no matter how much we do the right thing it might not be enough is harder.

First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

Thank you! Two age groups...well sort of - we got 6 chicks on 4/27 and 6 more on 5/4 and they are all different breeds so some were a little older than others but all within the 0-3 week range when we got them. So the youngest are about 1.5 weeks old now, and the oldest are about 3.5 weeks...

First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

Thanks! The heat light is quite elevated on the "play" side of the brooder - more for daylight than for warmth. The brooder is in my foyer - which only has one smaller high up window, so not a lot of daylight coming in. At night we turn off the lights, make sure they all find their way back...

First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

Thank you! I appreciate your kind words, and knowing I'm not alone in having lost chicks in spite of good care.

First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

That's not necessary. I understand you tagged her because you feel she has good knowledge to contribute to my concerns about the Coccidosis vs. whatever else might be plaguing my poor chicks. I'm interested in her advice too. And I also understand not everybody is sitting in front of their...

First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

Hi - yes, they have a Brinsea Ecoglow heater plate to go under whenever they want. They definitely sleep under there at night, but seem to prefer to be out in the other areas of the brooder much of the rest of the time.

First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

I understand! I'm at work during the week so that helps me not be constantly watching them - but when I'm home I do check on them - and sometimes they are all laying down - it's cute - but somewhere in the back of my head I'm worrying about them just the same. The first sign of less activity...

First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

Thanks. I have Nutri-Drench and will use it and skip the ACV going forward until they're older. Just waiting to hear if I should treat for Coccidosis - as if I do the Corid water, I won't want to mix them. These chicks came from a semi-local hatchery (50 miles from home) - I picked them up...

First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

Thank you! I'm curious for advice on the Coccidosis. They are on the medicated feed - and I have tried to keep their brooder clean - but obviously plenty of opportunities to eat poop. I have Corid - and could treat the rest of the flock if warranted. The two listless little ones - One...

First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

I have been using newspaper with paper towel over it in the brooder up to this point - changed 2x daily. They're now in a 2 dog crate brooder - 1 side still has the newspaper/paper towels (and is where the Brinsea, feed and water are). Other side I added pine shavings and they have some...

First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

Thank you. Rationally I know it. But any sweet little innocent creature I'm responsible for - I feel bad. It makes me want to fast forward a couple months to when they're big enough to be more sturdy. Baby chicks - just so fragile.

First flock - feeling like a lousy chicken parent

As first timers, we've really gotten a rough start. Did our homework to be prepared, built our own brooder from directions online... Got our first batch of 6 chicks on Saturday April 27th. Lost the first one that Wednesday, next one that Friday - asked for help and learned we had our brooder...
