Sara, Yes coal is good but lots of ash cleaning, plus you need a coal bin if buying by the tonnage, i know my Dad heats his home with a coal furnace it takes chestnut size coal, his home is 1400 sg ft, if I'm not wrong it only cost him about $500.00 year but he always has some coal left over...
Our home is 1800 sgf in our living space, my basement is the same 1800 sqf, its still unpartitioned but i have been studding it up and part is ready for paneling or drywall...,

box elder is from or should i say in the maple family and you can actually tap that type of tree for making maple syrup. However i don't tap it or the birch which is also tappeable..I cut them down and burn them..

Buster is cotton wood soft type, i dont think we have cotton wood here in pa were im at..lots of maple & red, white, pin oaks, yellow birch, box elder, dog wood, black gum which is a real pain in -- and a few other types..

Buster do they require you to get a permit for that wood or can you just help yourself to it..??? just wondering as i know here some place they will let you get it free and some you must get a permit..
