Hi all,

I've read many posts about this and think he is suffering from vitamin B12 deficiency.
He stopped walking suddenly last week. No symptoms prior to the day I found him on the ground.

I found him in the sun and it was a warm day. I thought heat stroke. I brought him in the house, it's been 7 days now.

He eats and drink a lot, no problem with appetite.
He seems to have some feeling in the legs and toes since if I pinch them, he moves a bit.
It doesn't seem broken as I can move the leg up, down, stretch it, squeeze it and it doesn't look like it hurt. No swelling, no redness. Both legs had the problem at the same time.

I did buy a new kind of feed and it's the first time I've tried it. They were on it for about 4 weeks. I'm back to my normal one now.

Can one single chicken have a deficiency? They are let lose often, I'm thinking maybe he ate less grass, greens and bug then others?! Or have a factor that makes it harder for him to metabolise B12. If so, what can that be?!

I built him a little hammock so he is kind of suspended in the air (on a soft cushion) so he can breath easier and be more comfortable and not poop on himself.

I will try only B12 supplement for now to see if it improves.
Can that also cause his comb and feet to be paler than the others? I know B12 interacts with the blood so I think it can be somewhat related but I am not sure..

I started giving him mealworms also. I supposed that would help.

No other chicken are infected / paralyzed.
His poop is normal.
I highly doubt Merreck, but they are not vaccinated. Never in contact with other flocks (and me neither).

Do you think I'm off track or going in the right direction?

At least he is separated from the others, and I tend to him AFTER the coop, so if it is a disease I hope it won't spread.

Any sheets or data or the daily dosage of vitamine B2 for a chicken?!

PS: I found dosage for B2 from Kathy!!!! Thanks :)

"Sorry for all the posts, but I'm on the iPad today.... Treatment for curly toe paralysis is 2 100 ug (microgram) doses of B2. I'm not saying that's what she has, just that giving her a couple of doses of B2 won't hurt even though she's on the Corid. To me her poop look better, which is a sign that your treatment is starting to work."

casportpony I wish you passed by here :)

I read the complete thread with the other paralyzed chick. I'll follow what you recommended. I'll weight him tonight and keep track!

I would give the chick poultry multiple vitamins, including the all of the B vitamins(B1, B2,) vitamin E and selenium. Poultry Nutri-Drench or Poultry Cell vitamins have vitamins, electrolytes, and minerals. Could you post a picture of how the chick sits or lies? There can be other causes of leg weakness besides B12 deficiency. Mareks could be a cause, and can show up from 3-25 weeks and older. How long have it's legs been lame? Has the chick been confined to a brooder since it was hatched? Here is some reading about vitamin deficiency and Mareks disease:

Thanks. I will read those if I have not already.

I can post pictures but she just lays normally, on her legs. The legs under her, you won't see them in the picture. She is NOT on her side. (or he.. anyway).

They were in a brooder about.. I don't know 2 weeks maybe. It was just a big box underneath a light, it was already pretty warm at that time. There was newspaper at the bottom and wood shaving. It's not a split leg.

OK I have the vit B1, B2, electrolytes and minerals. I don't have the vitamin E and selenium :( Will try to get some! Thanks :)

Oh sorry, the legs stopped working all of a sudden, 7 days ago.
Zero improvement (but I have not given vitamins before today, so.. could be my fault it has not progressed). Last meatie with these symptoms just had a leg injury and recovered with rest. This one is different, not a physical injury!

Jumping in on this thread -- having the same thing with a 4-5 week old Americauna/Wyandotte cross. Saturday she was fine, yesterday the other chicks were running over her in the brooder. Yesterday she was waddle walking - this morning she appeared to be drawing to one side. I had to leave to get vitamins, etc. Just dosed her with oral B12 and Nutri-drench.

Tonight she cannot stand at all however when picked up she has grip in her claws. She is laying on her side and will try to raise up when we check on her.

I have her separated from the remaining chicks. So far none of them show any other symptoms. I did mix the B12 and electrolytes in water and that was given to the other chicks and sickly chick as well.

Do I need to dose her several times tonight with the B12 or one dose for the night?

First time I've had this happen so I'm totally freaking out.

Poultry Nutri-drench has electrolytes in it already. Most vitamins are given once daily. I hope she gets better with the vitamins.

Thanks! I'm boiling some guinea eggs right now to mash up for her.

Stupid question - if this is a vitamin deficiency how long should it take for her to snap out of this? Or will she ever?

Hi guys!!

I don't have internet at home (well, my PC is dead, I'm trying to fix it..). Anyhow, if the chick would have gotten worst I would have gone to a friend's to get internet but, she improved!!!!!

I gave her B2 vitamin, E, electrolytes.I didn't find the selenium.. I started friday night.
Well, saturday morning she was already better!! I couldn't believe it. When I first posted, she had been sleeping non-stop for 2 days. I woke her up so she would feed, then she would sleep again. She just was SO lethargic.

Saturday she was completely woken up! I don't think I saw her eyes closed during all the weekend :) She ate NON-STOP!!!!

And then, on sunday she moved!!!! I think she's been down 10 days at that point. I was outside, so I don't know how she managed, but she moved about a foot.

Yesterday (monday), she moved about 4 foot!!!! I have no idea how, I wish I had seen her.

Also, now when I pick her up and put her back on the ground she "opens" her toes. I mean.. she prepares for "landing". Before the vitamins, her legs were just numb, there was 0 reaction when I lifted her and put her back on the ground.

I hope it will continue to go well. Here are the weights from saturday, sunday and monday morning:

862g
870g
948g
901g (this morning she had not eaten yet and I had to come to work, so I guess it's the weight of the empty crop that makes it seem lower. I'll weight her again tonight just to be sure).

I am very happy :) Thank you!

I hope my previous answer helps :) I saw improvements really fast with mine, but for the legs I think that can take a while.. especially if she's been down for long, the muscles will need a lot of training to get back to their previous state.
