Hi all,
I've read many posts about this and think he is suffering from vitamin B12 deficiency.
He stopped walking suddenly last week. No symptoms prior to the day I found him on the ground.
I found him in the sun and it was a warm day. I thought heat stroke. I brought him in the house, it's been 7 days now.
He eats and drink a lot, no problem with appetite.
He seems to have some feeling in the legs and toes since if I pinch them, he moves a bit.
It doesn't seem broken as I can move the leg up, down, stretch it, squeeze it and it doesn't look like it hurt. No swelling, no redness. Both legs had the problem at the same time.
I did buy a new kind of feed and it's the first time I've tried it. They were on it for about 4 weeks. I'm back to my normal one now.
Can one single chicken have a deficiency? They are let lose often, I'm thinking maybe he ate less grass, greens and bug then others?! Or have a factor that makes it harder for him to metabolise B12. If so, what can that be?!
I built him a little hammock so he is kind of suspended in the air (on a soft cushion) so he can breath easier and be more comfortable and not poop on himself.
I will try only B12 supplement for now to see if it improves.
Can that also cause his comb and feet to be paler than the others? I know B12 interacts with the blood so I think it can be somewhat related but I am not sure..
I started giving him mealworms also. I supposed that would help.
No other chicken are infected / paralyzed.
His poop is normal.
I highly doubt Merreck, but they are not vaccinated. Never in contact with other flocks (and me neither).
Do you think I'm off track or going in the right direction?
At least he is separated from the others, and I tend to him AFTER the coop, so if it is a disease I hope it won't spread.
Any sheets or data or the daily dosage of vitamine B2 for a chicken?!
PS: I found dosage for B2 from Kathy!!!! Thanks
"Sorry for all the posts, but I'm on the iPad today.... Treatment for curly toe paralysis is 2 100 ug (microgram) doses of B2. I'm not saying that's what she has, just that giving her a couple of doses of B2 won't hurt even though she's on the Corid. To me her poop look better, which is a sign that your treatment is starting to work."
