I'm a new member and I wanted to interduce myself. I'm also new to the whole chicken thing and loving it! I'm live in NC.I bought a few chicks in March this year and enjoying the eggs and letting them out of the coop that I built myself. They're so much fun.I hope you don't mind a question this soon but I would really like an answer if you don't mind. I have a rhode island red hen and rooster. I know that she may not go broody but I'm hoping for the best. So far she has laid 11eggs and I've only seen her on them once but not very long. Are the eggs bad now? How many do they normally lay before sitting on them? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Rhode island reds are not known to go broody very often unfortunately. If you're not gathering eggs then obviously they will collect in the nests. This doesn't mean it will cause the hen to go broody. How long have they been collecting? If you refrigerate them, they will probably not be bad and you can still eat them.
Here's a helpful link on broody hens that you might want to take a look at. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/encouraging-or-discouraging-broodiness-in-your-hens

Thanks so much mountain peep. She's laid one egg a day so they're 11 days old. I wish that I found this site earlier. I sure wish that she would because I've fallen in love with both of them. Especially the hen.I know that that probably sounds ridiculous but I can't help it lol.My wife's a little jealous though. I'll definitely check that link out.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You can always test the eggs by putting them in a pan of water. If the eggs sink to the bottom, they are good and you can eat them. If they float, they are bad and need to be trashed. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
