Hello all! I am new to the BYC family and am knee-deep in my first flock! My mother has had chickens for 10 years and I decided to take the leap. We just bought some acreage in Roy, WA and thought that the time for chickens was perfect. She has a large variety of hens and a rooster that is barred rock/australorp. we took 11 eggs from her hens and used her incubator to bring them up. 2 were not fertilized and the other 9 are healthy chicks! I found BYC through every search I ever did on Google. It always had a link to BYC. My 2 daughters love watching over the chicks and we can't wait for our fresh eggs.

Some topics I have been searching:
Chicken Coop designs: Specifically water nipples, poop boards, easy cleaning, DIY (scrap wood), and general designs.
Today I will be moving my chicks from the impromptu cardboard box brooder to a solid 3'x3'x18" wood built brooder.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. Our children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loved our chickens and made lap pets of the calmer and more gentle breeds (like Australorps).) If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.
