Hi all,
I originally posted in Oct 2013 about my Speckled Sussex hen who appeared to have Mycoplasma synoviae-swollen feet and legs. She is now 4 years old and her symptoms gradually appear to be getting worse (both legs affected now). I have tried a 3-day course of Tylan-50 0.5ml injections in her breast muscle each fall (when her swelling really ramps up) and haven’t seen any improvement. I don’t notice any other symptoms - she doesn’t appear to have any respiratory symptoms and doesn’t limp but does sit around a lot (her feet obviously hurt her). I haven’t tested for MS (not sure how to go about this-I live in California). My question to everyone is whether there is another drug I can try or should I do tylosin more often. I would really like to help her!

Thank you for any suggestions

You can give the Tylan 50 1ml orally twice a day for 5 days. The tetracycline drugs such as oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline are also used to treat MS. I don't know if Baytril (enrofloxacin) can be used for MS, but you could check with your local vet, since that is a powerful antibiotic. It is available online. Two Crows, one of the moderators on BYC, is familiar with the disease, so she may be of help if you send her a PM. It's interesting that her symptoms get worse, and then gets better.

Thank you for your helpful comments. I ordered some Denagard, after doing some more research on Mycoplasma. Like Baytril, Denagard may work in cases of Tylosin-resistant strains of M. synoviae.

You're welcome. There is some information about Denagard (tiamulin) here if you look in the search box at the top of the page. Apparently, it tastes bad, and some flavor the water with various products to make it palatable. Good luck with your chicken.

Hello,

I have a 1 yr old speckled Sussex and her feet look the same as yours. All of my other chickens of many different breeds all appear perfectly healthy. How is yours doing? Did the treatment work?

Thank you!

Baytril (enrofloxacin) is a good choice for mycoplasma.

Hi Ragreer
My speckled sussex seems about the same but it does seem that her feet are gradually getting more swollen each fall. I have tried Tylan injectible twice and Denguard once without seeing an improvement. I wish I could help her. Not sure what to do next? Do you think its worth a course of Baytril?

I have never used it, but it is about the best broad spectrum antibiotic out there for an animal. Many antibiotics will be harder to get after the end of this year 2016 due to new FDA regs. Search baytril or enrofloxacin sources here on BYC for places to order online. Your local vet might be able to help in diagnosing MS.

Can you take her to a vet? There is a good one there in Santa Cruz, and another in Monterey.
