Hello, I am from Oro-medonte, Ontario. I am trying to get the by-law changed to allow backyard hens. Any advice or examples of letters written would be very helpful!

Hi and welcome to BYC - you have some great advice from Y/Coop already so I'll just say hello!

All the best

I'm in the same boat as you!
I'm in Bracebridge, so not too far from you. My towns by-law is no laying hens in R1 zoning. I have 2 acres just on the skirts on town limits and they say I can't have hens, it's bull!!
There's a guy in Orillia trying to change the by-law there as well. this is the link to that http://www.orillia.ca/en/livinginor...ckens/RPT_DS_16_08_CC_Backyard_Hens_Final.pdf

I have e-mails into the district health unit for information.

How's your 'battle' going??

Hey Everyone! Just wanted to update you all.

I contacted our Mayor on July 14/16 with a letter saying how the by-law for laying hens within town limits should be revisited. I also posted on our town facebook page looking for residents that would support the bylaw change. Once I saw how much interest there was I asked everyone to write a letter to the Town support the change.

We just heard that they by-law has been amended, anyone with R1 or R2 zoning with 1/2 an acre of more can now have up to 10 laying hens!!!!
We are so excited to start this journey!

My advice to anyone, take it to social media!!! Get the support of everyone you can and get them to write letters to your Town council!
