What's the difference between frizzle, frazzle and sizzle?

Frizzle is a term used to designate that a chicken posesses the gene that cuases their feathers to curl. Frazzle, more commonly called curley is when the bird has two copies of the frizzle gene, which over curls the feathers and causes structural problems with them--they become brittle and break, often leaving a nearly naked chicken.
Frizzle can occur, and is recognised for every breed: frizzled blue cochin, frizzled barred rock, frizzled mille fleur d'uccle, frizzled bbr oegb, frizzled red pyle asil, etc.
Sizzle is essentially a frizzled silkie without silkie feathering; a frizzled silkie would have silkie feathering. Sizzle is being worked on as a new breed, not as a new variety of silkie.

Frizzle to Silkie can equal Sizzle or smooth sizzle or silkie feathered sizzle.
Frizzle to Sizzle or Frizzle to Frizzle and you'll get some Frazzled - over curly breaking feathers.
I have a group of sizzles - but I have one silkie feathered, two smooth and four normal Sizzles. I got bearded and non-bearded, two fairly typey and the rest... well there's progress to be made. I wouldn't trade having them for the world. Curly feathers, five toes, black skin and those sweet faces. I'm hooked.
As a new breed there's a ton of working toward type that's ongoing.
They're every bit as addictive as silkies, be ye therefore warned...

That's why we keep the smooth sizzles, because they will still produce Sizzles when bred to a Standard Sizzle without producing Frazzles.

So you sort of get the whole spectrum. Which is a lot of fun, and rather a lottery kind of effect when you hatch.

How can you tell if a Sillkie has frizzled feathers? Silkies are so poufy anyway, can you really tell the frizzle difference?
The goal with Sizzles is to have frizzled, non-silkie feathers. So the attempt is to remove the silkie gene from their gene pool. By using silkies, frizzled feathers or not, as seldom as possible once the other traits are fixed, fewer and fewer silkie feathered birds will hatch. More and more will be smooth or sizzled.
Select and breed only smooth to sizzle and eventually you'll get 50% of each; no curlies (frazzles), no silkies.
At this point we're still at the 25/50/25 percentages for silkieness; there are still a lot of smooths and Sizzles with a copy of h, so keep records and when possible remove breeder birds who've parented a silkie feathered chick.
Select and breed only smooth to sizzle and eventually you'll get 50% of each; no curlies (frazzles), no silkies.
