Is this the weirdest thing ever?

We found one of our favourite hens dead this afternoon in the coop. She was in the most unusual position: head down, stuffed down in the corner of the coop with her legs sticking out.

At first I thought something had chewed through the bottom corner of the coop and was dragging her out by the head. But when I swept away all the shavings, I couldn't see any hole.

She doesn't show any sign of being bitten or chewed. No blood on her at all. Two other hens have blood on their feathers though, and there are little drops on the coop floor. Nothing serious, though... could have been an ordinary squabble.

We had a thunderstorm come through this afternoon. Do you think the hens could have all piled on top of her in fear? Could she have suffocated? Or maybe an animal did kill her? No experience here with weasels, etc. What do all of you think?

Sad Chicken Lady

How sad! It sure sounds like they squished her when they all hid together in the corner. I've never seen anything like this except with baby chicks. Maybe someone else will have had a similar experience.

oh how awful

I have no clue maybe someone else knows so I am giving you a bump

These are adult hens that are familiar with the weather, or naive pullets? How many chooks were in the coop? Bantams or Standards?

Certainly possible. I had a smaller pullet smothered in a corner one night (she was a runt in the group & had made it to only half the size of the others), there were 38 larger siblings that crushed her-- so it depends on how many you have . . . . . their size, her size. Corners can be dangerous.

would rounding the corners off work to prevent that? a gal at tsc was telling me that they brood their meaties at home like this to prevent a problem like that but never put much thought into it till this post.
