Have you ever heard of this!

TIP: Testing an Egg for Freshness
Put the egg in a pan of cold water. The fresher the egg, the sooner it will fall to the bottom; if rotten, it will swim at the top.
–Roberts' Guide for Butlers & Other Household Staff, 1827
(Got it from the Old Farmer's Almanac mailing )

Here are a few different tests for freshness.

As an egg gets older, the egg loses moisture and the air sac gets bigger. After a while, the air sac is big enough that the egg floats. Also, if an egg is filled with active bacteria, the bacteria give off a gas and the egg will likely float.

An egg that sinks is not 100%, absolutely, without a doubt good, but it is a great indication. An egg that floats is not necessarily unsafe to eat, but it is an indication it should be treated with some suspicion. As said in the link, make sure it is well cooked if you do decide to try it.
