Help wiring thermostat.

I have a 240v water heater thermostat, i thought that it could run fine on 120v. Either that is the problem,or i have no clue how to wire a light onto a thermostat . the hot leg from the outlet into port of the the thermostat. From there it goes into the light bulb. The neutral goes straight from the outlet to the bulb.
Here is a picture of the diagram i am following.

And here are a couple of pictures of how i have it hooked up.




The lightbulb comes on but the thermostat will not shut it off once it reaches the desired temperature.

There are multiple causes for problems that i can think of.
Please give me suggestions for making this work.
1)Thermostat made for 240v cant properly run on 120v
2)White and black wires coming off light bulb socket hooked to wrong wires (neutral/hot leg)
3)Thermostat wires not connected to the right ports.

All advice is welcome.
 
Hi, I just made an incubator with these same parts. I know the black wire from the plug goes to the thermostat and then another black wire from the thermostat to the brass connector on the light fixture. The white wire goes to the silver connector on the light. You may need to adjust the dial on the thermostat til it shuts off when your thermometer reads th desired temp. It took me awhile to adjust everything, but then I did not have to worry. My eggs are on day 19 now.
 
Yes the thermostat works.
I set it on the stove and heard it snap off, and i now rewired the ports i have the wires going into. The bulb turned on when i plugged it in, and cut off the bulb at the desired temp. Now i am just waiting to see if it will turn the bulb back on when it dips below the desired temp.
I think the new configuration is gonna work.

I use the same thermostat. It gives me a ten degree range between it's off/on. I therefore gave it a higher watt lamp so that it goes through the cycle quicker.
