Will Runners make use of a pond or will they prefer to stay on land?? I saw an Indian Runner last week and i must get a few to add to my flock of ducks..any special needs?? advice??Thanks

I don't own any, but we do have some at a couple of lakes near my home. They seem to like to swim just as much as any other duck. One used to hide in the reeds/brush hanging over the water during the day.

there duck wat do u think lol water but nsome runners love the land u must test urself and no they do not need any special treatment just lots of love r u getting as adults or ducklings?

No special needs, they are just the same as other ducks. My runners are water babies and are in the swimming pools most of the day or digging mud holes, they love to make mud holes, the more the merrier and the dirtier the merrier.

I would rather get ducklings

As mine have gotten older (4+ months), they spend less time in the pool, but they still can be found there a decent amount. They are finally starting to get a little braver each week and foraging further away from the duck yard (previously my old greyhounds potty yard) by the house.

But regardless of where they are when I start to empty their pool, they RUN over to it while it is draining and just have a blast playing in the muck while I drain, rinse, clean, replug and fill. And are usually back in the pool before it is even close to full and give me a look when they jump in and don't hit water when they expect... duh, I told them it wasn't full yet!
It's funnier because they jump in by the slide and end up sliding down in LOL

All 21 of my runners love the pond and spend about half their time in it. They spend the other half of their time running around investigating every mud hole they can find (and there are a lot of mud holes). If they are not swimming in the pond they are cleaning themselves up in a mud hole... lol. Currently half the property has standing water so all our waterfowl are in heaven. In the drier months they still love the pond but spend an equal amount of time foraging.

As long as my ten runners have a place to forage and clean water deep enough to wash their entire heads in, they are happy.

In the warmer weather they have a couple of concrete mixing pans with water, and they frolic in that for hours some days. In the really hot weather, I make sure to supply fresh cool water at least once, sometimes twice daily.

My Runners will stay near the water while relaxing and will bathe every day in a pool but they also run the farm and do not act like they have to get in the pool on a regular basis. As long as I have a place for them to dunk their heads they seem pretty happy. But I love to watch them play in water.
