I am having a heck of a time calibrating my thermometer and hygrometer for my incubator. I've done the crushed ice method for the "out" reading on my probe thermometer, and I swear it gives me a different reading every time! The last time I added more ice and think I've finally got it figured out as 1.4 degrees too high.

Same thing with the wet salt method for calibrating the hygrometer. I've got three digital Walmart combo units in the bag with the cup of wet salt, and one is definitely broken because it always reads 20% no matter what, but the other two are both reading the same - 61%. It should be 75% right?

I'm having a hard time trusting these things, even "calibrated."

Would I be better off with the little round analog reptile ones?

I tried EVERYTHING that Walmart and all the pet stores in the area sold. I ended up taking them all back; basically, they were all junk. Then a buddy, just to shut up my complaining, gave me a Vicks like the one sold in the ad below. The temperature is always right on, and after the salt/water test, I know that the humidity is 2% off. I really like it, and I have two now, one for each of my Genesis 1588's.

can you please explain about the calibrating in a bag with wet salt? I have one from incubator warehouse. it should read 75%? and if it reads 70% then its 5% off? any size bag will work?

You put 1/2 cup salt and 1/4 water in a cup, place inside a sealed ziplock bag or other airtight container with your hygrometer for 12-24 hours. Should read 75% so if yours says 70%, you know your hygro reads 5% too low. I don't think the container size matters too much as long as you give it enough time.

I'm going to see if I can find one of these today! Thanks!
