PLEASE READ if your chicken is sick!

For all of you out there, please go online now and order some GSE (grapefruit seed extract). Google for the best price. I usually purchase through Iherb.com This is a must have for chicken people! It has saved my entire flock (minus one but she died because she didn't get any!)

Almost every issue I am seeing can at least be helped by GSE. You just put some in their water daily. If they are not eating or drinking, you can force feed it. Please don't think is too easy, so it can't possibly work. If I thought that, I would have lost half my flock. I have 7 chickens that are alive right now because of GSE. A vet wouldn't help me without charging me $60 for a vet visit but this $15 bottle of GSE did the job.

I know I sound like a broken record and there will be some doubters out there, but just try it. Iherb.com has a small bottle for $13 and they have free shipping over $40 (so pick up some colloidal silver while you are at!) Even without free shipping, their shipping for this one item is $2/USPS or $4/UPS. For $15 you can have on hand something that will treat 400 chickens with 1 dose (at a 1 drop dose if you were force feeding). How can you beat that? I have no vested interest in this stuff. I am just a customer who found out it works. I brought a chicken back from the brink of death with GSE and I just want to get the word out so that everyone can have some on hand for when an emergency arrives. There is nothing worse than having to wait it out all night until the local feed store or TSC opens. If you get this, you won't have to.

Also, check out the following post for how I successfully dealt with a sick chicken. This chicken would not open her eyes, would not move, and at times would only breath through her mouth. She is alive and well today. I was dealing with coryza, but this treatment can work for a variety of illnesses.

can it be put into a metal watering container?

I have some at home but was afraid to use it because I heard citrus can be bad for poultry? How much did you give? Are there safety studies out there that found it to be safe for use in poultry?

They've removed the pathogen killing component so it's not like you are feeding your chicken a grapefruit. You are welcome to google GSE for animals or poultry/chickens, which is what I did before I began using it, although I am less likely to rely on some government funded testing than I am on personal experiences, either mine or others. I have been conducting my own "backyard testing" for 8 months now and went from having a chronically ill flock to a healthy flock. For me, that's all the proof I need! Obviously, it is up to each individual's discretion to use that information how they see fit but if only I had known about GSE when all my problems began! I am positive I wouldn't have lost the 1 hen I did. Hopefully others will be able to use this info to save their chickies!

The dosing guidelines are on my blog page. I use a dropperful/gallon (about 30 drops) when healthy and double it for a few days if there is even an indication of illness.

I have some of that in my cabinet & am going to put it in our water for our chickens right now!! I have one pullet that is sneezing and has a little rattle in her when she breathes occasionally & was trying to figure out what to do. Thanks for your post!

That sounds about right, although if she is sounding a little sicky, it wouldn't hurt to do more. I always double up if anyone starts sounding congested and they are usually cleared up by the next day or so. This has only happened a couple times and I came to find out that my lovely helpers (ages 12 and 10) had "forgetten" to put the GSE in for a few days. They now understand the seriousness and don't forget anymore!

Just thought I'd point out that, according to a University of Florida publication on poultry diseases, coryza has a low mortality, it is recommended that known carriers be vaccinated, and birds do remain carriers.

One of my hens has what seems like a diahrrea (her poop is a greenish-yellow and really fluid) and doesn't want to move around alot. When she does walk she wobbles like she can't get balenced. She hides in the bushes all day but will still come when I lure my girls out by shaking a cup of corn. I think she has a digestion problem, so will this help?

Like I've said, I use it for EVERYTHING. It works on viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic. It doesn't cause diarrhea so it is not going to hurt. I would try a couple drops 3 times a day. If you don't see improvement, then I would try increasing by a drop or 2. Make sure she stays hydrated. You can also give her probiotics if you think it is digestive. That's what I would do...

Would GSE help with a hen that seems healthy, but can't walk too good... just in case there is something bad going on inside? Here is my previous post and Cuddles is still in the basement....My Dad had a heart problem, so instead of getting to take her "back" to the vet, I'm heading to NC tomorrow.....
Cuddles is a 12 month old dominique. She is a real fighter. About 2 months ago, I noticed her limping and took her to an avian friend of mine. She checked her leg and hip movement, but could find nothing. The limp got worse, so we took her to a vet that would see chickens. X-rays were taken and nothing was found, but the hock was swollen just a little bit. The vet splinted, which we had to take off, because it was cutting off the circulation and she was getting worse with it on. She eventually got to where she couldn't stand up as the left leg was failing too. Thankfully, I read about the vitamin B deficiency and tried that....she is at least standing now, but her legs are still weak. She is trying so hard.....she eats, drinks and poop looks normal.....Is there anything else I can do to strengthen her?
