My 21 week old dark brahma Nugget has somehow broken her top beak. I don't know how in the world this happened...I didn't see it. I went out to check on them this evening and found her alone on the roost like this. It appears as if some of the beak is sticking out of the side...maybe bone? Also, on the inside of her mouth there is an avulsed area where it looks like when it broke some of it went down into her mouth. There is dried blood, which I tried to clean up the best I could to get a good look but I think it must have happened earlier in the day while I was gone.

Any advice would be great. The only thing I really did was clean it. Other than that, I honestly have no clue what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Poor girl! Can the beak be glued back in place, with gel super glue so there's less of a chance of getting in the nostril and mouth? I haven't had a chicken with a broken beak but short of having expert advice on the situation I think I'd clean it as best as possible then glue it back in place very carefully. Maybe wrap her in towel and have someone help you so her head can be held perfectly still...wish I knew something better, or even the right thing to do for her. If any of the beak falls off I'd save it and glue it back on.

My vet is actually open tomorrow so I plan on taking her in, but no one is on-call tonight. I found her after hours of course.

She let me clean it and manipulate it a bit, and she doesn't act like it hurts her, but I would think it does. I'm afraid to manipulate it too much as I don't want to do more harm than good. I thought about gluing it, but I can't get it back over far enough so it would attach and then that piece of bone or whatever that is sticks out on the outside where it clearly doesn't belong. I'm sure it broke off from the inside somewhere. Poor Nugget....I feel horrible this happened, and worse that I can't seem to help her.

That's good the vet can see her tomorrow. Hopefully she can be kept in a dark crate until she gets to the vet. Maybe a little tape or some kind of padding could be put over the bone part that's sticking out so it doesn't get snagged on anything until the vet see her.

Hope she'll be ok.

I wonder if that's something similar to what the vet might use?

Rockin Reds, that's great...please update us if and when you're up to it.

I'm not sure. Hopefully I will find out tomorrow. I plan on calling my vet first thing in the morning. Thankfully she is in on Saturdays. I will update after we see her. Thanks so much for the support...I really need it right now.
