We just put a wifi webcam in our coop. Cost around 80 bucks on Ebay. After installing the software from the disc, my computer monitor just has the coop picture on the screen, with a full view of the nests, and I can clearly see who is laying and when.....love it! Plus we can email pictures to my husband at work, we can click "still" pictures and save them in a folder. The webcam moves with a click to get better views of one nest or another. Also this saves trips out to the coop, I can see when one is laying, and go right out and get the egg. We have a chart on the fridge, with the weekly totals for each girl. I check on them at night, make sure all the girls came inside to roost, make sure no one is getting picked in the evening when they come in the coop but stay up for two hours with the artificial light that goes on/off on a timer (they started a bit of fighting when the supplemental light started but it is better now). I do not breed them but I do have fun knowing who is laying which eggs and how often

Thanks! The trap nests look pretty fun as well. Chickens are more than a hobby, they are a way of life

The problem with the webcam--- nothing gets done because we sit and watch them all day, they are such quirky goofy creatures. My dog even sits in the chair and watches them haha!

trap nesting is very fun. since i have been doing it i know so much more about my birds than i ever did. i handle them more, now they are used to me being constantly around them. if i feed to late in the morning they'll leave a package at the back door for me. it is indeed a way of life.

today,
one of my best layers is missing. she didnt show up for morning chow. she's one of my barred rocks.....sighs.......i live next door to acres and acres of forset land.i'm thinking she wondered off. my chicken yard is not yet fully secured now i'm in build, build, build mode. i'll be outside all day looking and listening for her..........i'm really worried........

any chance she's got a hidden nest somewhere and has gone broody?

couple of mine did that, and one finally came out for breakfast one day so then i followed her 'home' and gathered her up that night... during an ice/snow/sleet storm, half drowned and frozen, covered in mud... the eggs all got washed and put in the incubator till i was sure she'd relocate, then she got them all back (minus the few that were clear). she hatched 9 cuties 3 days ago, and has them outside even, in a large dog crate until they get a bit more mobile. i found the other too but she promptly went un-broody when i moved her. (all dudds)

i can only hope she has a hidden nest somewhere. i only had three br hens and a roo,now i'm down to two.i hope i can get some fertilized eggs before anything else happens.finished a breeding pen today tommorrow they'll be moving in.
