my twp. told me I have to get rid of my chickens.--Help__

So how do you start to I guess change the laws regarding having chickens? I went before the zoning appeals board last night and they would not say yes but they also didn't say no. It seemed like such a simple common sense request. My immediate neighbors as well as everybody living with in 300 ft is in favor of us having the chickens. Two of our immediate neighbors have horses. I tried the approach that is it not part of the govt's job to help the citizen in there persuit of happiness as long as that citizen is not infringing on the rights and quality of life of others. I guess I have to pursue the planning commision now but it sure seems like they just enjoy making it complicated. All though I did not say it it seemed like what we deal with in Washington but at the local level. Please give me your thought and opinions, I am not going to drop this
 
we are on the border of being rural as far zoning issues go. we live on the end corner of a dead end subdivision backing into wooded land locked property.( I have to be honest and say that officially we are zoned residential apposed to rural or agricultural.) these two properties have horses. Our other 2 immediate neighbors don't mind the chickens and even went to the zoning appeals meeting to say so. Beyond that I have contacted everybody living within 300 feet who received a letter in regards to our appeal and they all are supportive. I feel like the twp is saying no just because they can and want to flex their power. So at this point I feel like all I can do is to change some law to allow us to have chickens and hope they will let us keep ours while I go through the process. any advice would be appreciated.
 
the problem with people who only have a *little* bit of power is they feel the need to prove they have it.

this is why we moved out of CA... tried to fix things there, but so many people with so many ways to tell you what you aren't permitted to do.
don't really have a solution for you here except keep after it... just wanted to say I'm cheering you on.
 
thanks ZZgypsy, On a positive note, I have been researching things hear and on Mi.gov and I found that Mi has a right to farm act that totally seems to favor the citizen. Don';t know that I fully understand all the legaleez but I hope I can stick it to my twp. I know that is not the right attitude but common sense seems to go out the window with aquiring power.
