A few days ago I saw an ad on CL for some "Free Bantam Roosters" . After reading what the poster said they had,I decided to respond.I wanted to pick up a Red Cochin Roo and a White Cochin Roo.I made arrangements and went to pick up the birds today.The man was nice, friendly and happy to be getting rid of some roosters. We walked out back to the coop/run area.
I was shocked....
The guy had like 20 chickens and probably 12 were bantam roos! The first thing I saw was a young roo with blood all over his face, wattles and comb...there were several others with scarring and blood as well.The inside of the coop had fresh sawdust down but I noticed some splattered blood spots all over the walls in the coop.The run was tiny, full of mud, and totally stressed out birds!! In talking to the man, i realized he did not even know which white cochin was his male and which was his female! He tried to tell me his roo laid an egg every day!!
Some of the roos were pecked BALD, and I mean BALD! It was so sad to see ...
He did state he had bought an "Assorted Bantams" batch last spring and that this was the first time his roosters had drawn blood was today....right before I got there
One thing I did notice was that the hens had all their feathers...and I got to thinking...The roos are so busy fighting..no one is mating much!
I think the man was appeasing his DD and bought her some bantams but sheesh....he didn't even know which were boys and which were girls...or what breeds he had. The good news is, I managed to get a pair of White Cochin Bantams and a Red Cochin roo.
Thing is, if ya know me, you know my face is an open book.I am sure he knew I was surprised. I did manage to educate him a little and recommended he separate the roos today. I also told him he should have no more than one in that run. He said he has been trying to get rid of the roos but no one wants them and he can't FIND IT IN HIM TO KILL THEM!
He also said he had a lady who was going to pick them all but one up and use them in a school thing?? I don't know, all i know is I have 3 new chickens who i am gonna rehab....
I don't think the man was intentionally causing harm but sheesh!! EDUCATE yourselves people!!

BTW: All 3 are in quarantine (where they will be for a month). The pair is together and the lone roo is alone but can at least see and hear the others.
