Does a hen lay the same color egg that she was hatched from, or is it entirely a genetic crapshoot? I have three chicks (hopefully hens) and I am wondering if I can anticipate their egg color judged by the eggs they came from.

Nope.

Generally, if the egg has spots, the chicken will lay spotty eggs too. But as for the *color*, the color your hens will lay will likely be a mixture of the roo's genetics and the hen's. If you had a dark roo and a light hen, you'll probably get a medium egg, even though the chick hatched from a light egg.
Olive eggers are a great example of this. First generation olive eggers will be hatched from a blue or brown egg, but will lay olive eggs.
