Angel wing in ducks, & how we wrap to mend it - Pictorial

Ok here it goes. This is how we prefer to wrap any waterfowl with early on set Angel Wing (think hitch bickers thumb) to help correct it. There are other methods, but this is what works well for us.

Regular wing

Angel wing (note this duckling had its wing turned out for the photo & does not have AW)

Tucking wing tip

Starting the wrap

Around the body

I like to figure 8 around the body and tail leaving the legs free

This is the hardest thing ever for me to do. Lol This way looks a lot easier than the way i was told. I love vet wrap.

Me too, much easier to work with. If you have a duck who tugs at it, top it with tape, duct, electrical and medical all work well.

Don't pull too tight so they have full natural movement with their free wing and legs.

About what age does it start to show up?

It can happen when the flight feathers start growing in and are full of blood. If you notice the wing image and the heavy feathers shown. It very much so resembles a hitch hickers thumb sticking out.

I just had this start to appear on my ancona drake 2 days ago. He turned 5 weeks old yesterday. I asked Celtic to explain how to fix it, and she made this wonderful thread for us. I got it wrapped up this afternoon. I will let you know how it looks in a few days.

Celtic, hubby wanted me to ask if we should change wrap tomorrow or leave it? And I am wondering if there is anything I should be watching for in case it is too tight?

I don't remove them for 7-10 days. It takes time for it to correct and unwrapping and rewrapping just prolongs the healing and retraining of the muscles.

You would quickly know if it's too tight. They won't be active, labored breathing, lack of interest in food/water/play. If I can easily fit two fingers inside the wrap I know it is ok.
