I have a 12 week old silkie that has her head down, scooting backwards. She shakes her head back and forth like she is having a seizure. When I picked her up her head curves right down and under her body. I have have her since she was a week old, along with six other silkes. I haven't not changed feed or water, only snack are whole wheat bread crumbs and dried meal worms at night. Not sure what is going on, I have pulled her from the rest of them. I am looking for any and all help, new to the chicken world and new to this site, you can email me at [email protected].

Thanks

I have updated this post title so other may find help quicker if dealing with a similar situation.

I just read the post about grapeworm, my silkie is shaking her head also. so I tried the eyedropper of olive oil and massge the throat. didn't see any results. She is curling her neck right under her body. Even when I was massaging her throat, she had her neck curled. Any suggestions?

I had read another post about a wobbling chick that sounds like what we were dealing with. Someone posted to look up "wry neck". Which I did and it sounds exactly like what we are dealing with. I thought I would post it hear, just incase someone down the road reads my post they would have some insight. Thank you so much for posting. I have look up wry neck and found this post very informative. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/662850/a-happy-ending-to-a-wry-neck-chick-story This sounds like what I am dealing with.

One questiion is where do I get Selenium? Will do more research, just thought I would quickly post this link.

I am researching "wry" or crocked neck and found this information:
The symptoms of crookneck include
1. Tucking the head between legs
2. Tucking the head between legs and backing up
3. Tucking the head between legs and tumbling over
4. Walking in circles
5. Holding the head to one side
6. Loss of balance

I am finding other post that are very helpful:

From shelleyb1969: I had a juvenile Silkie chick develop wry neck. I bought the Vitamin E gel tabs to treat her with. I cut the end off and squirted the liquid into her beak. After about 4 days I had to band her leg to be able to tell which one I was supposed to be treating. Her recovery was very fast...1 week and she was back to normal. I highly recommend you try it...it definitely can't hurt because it is treatable and curable.

From pontoosuc: Poly visol once a day, vit E once a day, some pedialyte in the water, and scrambled eggs, yogurt as treats. We did this for about three weeks, tapering off during week three. When she was having a bad moment, I'd gently uncurl her neck and hold it up for a moment or two which seemed like it helped a little bit. I did band her leg with a twisty tie so I could tell her from the other two Australorps. Left her with the others since it seemed that any increase in stress would set her off. One suggestion was to give the vit E with Selenium
but by the time I found it and bought it the capsules were not in liquid form so never did use any of it. Give it a try. Be warned you wear as much of the poly visol and vet E as the bird gets, if not more!

From three cedar silkies: This was the regimen we use:

Vit. E (400mg) snip the tip off a capsule and squeeze into mouth twice a day for 10 days, then every other day for another 5 days
Selenium (25mcg) dissolve one 250mcg tablet in 2 ml water and give 0.2cc once a day for 10 days, then every other day for another 5 days
Prednisone 1mg. dissolve one 10 mg tablet in 2 ml water and give 0.2cc twice a day for 5 days, then once a day for 5 days, then every other day for 5 days
B-Complex purchased in liquid form from Walgreens; 0.5 cc twice a day for 5 days, then once a day for 5 days, then every other day for 5 days

big improvement!! I only have the Poly-Vi-Sol on hand, so gave her some of that and couple eye droppers of electrolight water. Silkie is up with wobbly head, but trying to eat. Plan on getting some vitamin E and Selenium today. Plus fixing some scramble eggs and yogurt. Does anyone think I should add vitamin E to my other chickens water and/or food? I do not want to go through this again.

Heading to the store with my list, is there anything I should pick up?

Selenium (50mg) this will help the chick absorb the vitamin E
Vitamain E - 400 mg gel caps
Poly-Vi-Sol - no iron
Niacin - not sure what this is for yet, need to research
Yogurt
Eggs

Silie seems to be more alert, head is up more, but haven't seen it eat yet. Scramble eggs and yogurt are still sitting there. how long should I leave them in cage before they go bad???

Okay, I researched niacin, which is a good from of B complex, and Selenium helps the body to absorb the vitamin E. I have read that the vitamin A in the Ply-Vi-Sol, will cancel out the E, so I shouldn't use that. This is all very confusing, I have read so many post trying to figure this out. What do I give the sick chicken with Wry neck? Also wondering if I should add something to other chickens water so this doesn't happen to them? I sure would appreciate any and all help.
