Using these plans (with some minor modifications), I spent the last few days putting this bad boy together and I'm really pleased with how well it turned out! It takes about 2 lbs of pressure to open, so my chicks need to gain about half a pound, but I figure they'll put that on over the time it'll take them to learn to use it. I took a quick video of their introduction as well, they weren't so impressed...but it's alright, I know they'll love it eventually. Hopefully this weekend we'll have the run finished too (unfortunately need an extra set of hands for that project and my husband's been super busy) and then I'll be all set to kick them outside and get my spare room back :D.

I like the paint job too!

Thanks, it was a lot of fun to build! I think the worst of it was either cutting out the stencils or making the mitered corners on the lid without a real setup for it. I also learned that when working with plexi, a woodburning kit works wonders for pre-melting the screw holes to avoid stress cracks :D.

When the babies started escaping their brooder I thought it was cute and made them a "playpen" out of the super cheap Home Depot carpet that comes on a roll....then they started flying over that and by the time I started thinking about better containment, the real carpet was already going to need a good shampooing so I figured why fight it, they'll be outside soon enough. I'm hoping an industrial shampooing (or three) will fix it right up, and if not there's a hardwood floor underneath I've been considering exposing anyway :p.

Thanks Den, I'll have to give that a go! They're already comfortable eating out of it so it'll be good to get them used to the motion next :).

That's fantastic. I *love* the little footprints and the chicken/egg logo you painted on it!

Your chicks are pretty cute too. Makes me want to raise some more.

Thanks for sharing!
