Breeding Pairs

Guess I'll spead this out a little. It takes 3-4 weeks to be sure that a hen is free from the influence of her last rooster. That means that you have to pen them alone or with the mate you intend for a month before collecting hatching eggs and you can be sure of the purity of the chicks. My flock is gamefowl. when they are young, they can run together with very few problems, but as they grow, fighting dictates seperate pens. Once they are penned seperately, they can never be turned loose with others again. The roosters are the main problem, but game hens are really scrappy also. Now regular breeds don't have as many problems living together as gamefowl, but having roosters seperated for breeding still means that they will resent the presence of other roosters when they can get to them. Ya just gotta try them and see, but be prepared if it doesn't work out. You might see peacefull coexistance for a while and then come home from the store or work to find bloody roosters or even dead ones. Good luck.......Pop
