Sour Crop or Crop Bound (same thing) means that there is an obstruction of some sort (including items such as pieces of plastic, poor diet or other hazardous materials) blocking food from leaving the crop and going into the gizzard. You can tell if the chicken has sour crop by looking at the crop: if the crop is hard and distended quick action must be taken, or the bird will die. A well working remedy for this is: to force one (1) tablespoon of sweet oil (olive or other cooking oil down the bird's throat followed by two (2) tablespoons of warm water. After this, hold the bird upside-down (this will not hurt the bird) and gently need the crop until the contents are forced out of the mouth. If the bird is still not recovering, try again. In extreme cases, the bird will need surgery. But since surgery is so little common for chickens, and you probably don't have the money either, the best way to handle extreme cases of Sour Crop is to, with much sadness, end the bird's life to put it out of it's misery. :'(
