Due to a recent heartbreaking experience, I am hoping that folks will kindly share quarantine procedures for new birds, and for birds returning from shows. I would truly appreciate suggestions and input on what has and hasn't worked for you. If you are willing to post pictures, it would be appreciated.

Well I have a pen that is on the other side of the property. About half an acre away. We keep new birds there for at least a month. Then when they leave that pen we Bleach the heck out of pen since it is a long time until another one is going in the pen.

I have only brought day old chicks in, they go under the broody that night. Have never added an adult bird, so I'll be watching the thread.

Thanks for your input. Would you mind sharing what type of setup do you have for the quarantine pen? Is it a wood coop, plastic dog crate, wire cage etc? Is there an outdoor run?

Do you bathe and do any preventive measures for new birds?
Thanks!

My pen is 8ft by 24ft by 8ft tall. I have a dog igloo in it for a house(easy to bleach). It is an outdoor run and gets both shade and sun. I do a health check before bringing them home. If they look sickly they don't make it to my land or even my car. They stay in there for about a month or two. I live in sand. So that is what is in the pen. Pen is wood and chicken wire.

Very nice thread!!! Love it and will also follow..
We just started a new flock.. Our few of our neighbors
have chickens. Since we all visit each other I bought
enough medicine for all of them... We have not had
any problems yet..however I like to educate myself
to protect our precious girls... Don't want to feel like
I need to run to the feed store AGAIN..

Question if we do have mites how old do the little ones
need to be? To dust? I will go and look for mites in a bit..
Our girls are about a month old..

Please since you go to other people's coops make sure you be careful of bringing bad things, IE germs, mites, ect into your coop. I have shoes that never go into my coop. a cheap pair of water shoes. That is what I wear at other people's coops. I have been blessed not to have mites. Again a blessing of sand. If you look in the forum there are many listings that talk about mites.

Unfortunately, you may not see the mites because they can be microscopic. Best way to tell is when giving a bath in flea and tick shampoo or when spraying with Poultry Protector or Adams Flea and Tick spray. If your birds have mites, when you spray or wet them the mites may try crawling onto your hand to get away. Sorry, I don't know the age at when you can dust....

I have only had a problem bringing in new birds. The problem was identified during quarantine and before they were placed with my flock of 10-16 week olds. Unfortunately, we had a very sad situation with the new birds.

What happened?

I put sevin dust in the dust baths, and if the young ones who are taken care of by a broody hen, decide to dust bath then they do. Never had any issues what-so-ever with sicknesses due to sevin dust being used too early.

I just don't bring in adult birds from someone that I don't know, and even then, I rarely do. I only do chicks, and don't buy from someone that doesn't vaccinate their flock for ILT, as it is a disease that has wiped out a few flocks in my province a few years back. It is a reportable disease, and they will come and exterminate your entire flock.

Know who you are buying from. Visit their farm with proper shoes like mentioned above. I also change all my clothes and shower after visiting a farm and going back out to my flock. My rubber boots I wear 100% of the time on my land, never leave the back step.
