They will freeze. A tiny bit of water seems to get stuck between the nipple and the red plastic part outside and it will freeze once it gets really frigid. It doesn't take much to thaw that one ice drop and have it working again though.

I've never really had them freeze up much more than that, but I do swap buckets throughout the day when it's really cold. And I use a 2 gallon bucket inside a 5 gallon with insulating foam between them to keep the water from freezing as quickly.

I use the Rent-a-Coop cups on a 5 gallon bucket, never tried the nipples. We don't get really cold weather, but when we do I have a tire and rubber tub I use for watering. It's easy to break the ice on top of the tub when it does freeze.

My boys have very big wattles, so if they dip their wattles in anything, they're bound to get frostbite, so I wanted something different than a dip. I do currently have the cups on a 5 gallon bucket and I love them for the summer.
