My backyard Coturnix coop and urban farm

So I am kind of new to quail but not new to poultry. I built this coop about a month ago after picking up 11 Coturnix chicks. My plans are to collect a few hens for egg production. Out of the 11 I only managed to get 2 hens and of course 9 roosters.

A week later I decided to buy 11 more 6 month old cots off a local breeder and got 5 more hens along with 6 more roosters. Obviously 7 hens and 15 roosters is a bad ratio so I culled 6 of the older roos and took 5 out of the main coop and put them in a bachlor pen. So in the end I have 7 hens and 4 roos in the main coop.

The coop is homebuilt out of pressure treated and barn siding. I also just installed a home made PVC feeder that is working great and really frees up valuable coop space. Everyone is doing great and the older hens have been laying like crazy for the last 2 weeks! They are on Purina Game Bird Layena and Breeder and soon will be adding in some scratch.

Very NIce!!! What are the dimensions of the little coop??? Maybe my DH can build me one, I am currently housing mine in rabbit cages

I will be changing the hen house a little in the spring. I want to make the roof higher so I can install a heat lamp on a thermostat for winter.

Nice coop! For a male female ratio, you can go as high as1:6. 4:7 is way too many roos. You will have a lot of fighting and hens getting worn out and plucked bald. 2:7 isn't even bad...but I'd move at least 2 more of your roos to the bacholer pad.

I do need to take more roos out. My plan was to keep 2 roos and as many hens as possible. Now I have 7 to cull! Just need another week or 2 of growth.

You have a very nice coop and yard! I have just started keeping quails. They've been laying wonderfully. What do you do in winter?
