Hey everyone

Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this subject and I have tried to look up info on the internet with no luck so I figured you guys would be able to help me out. As you may know I have 3 Mallards, 2 hens and a drake. How can you tell if eggs are fertilized? I've seen the term "broody" and I'm assuming this is when a hen has eggs she is sitting on and attempting to hatch. How do you know when this has happened? I've seen my drake at least attempt to mate with my hens (not sure if he's actually doing anything or not) I'm confused about this also, it's late November and I would think not the time for ducklings so are they just practicing haha or is it a dominance thing? This is their first year, they're almost 5 months old now. Thank you for your help!

Duckies and Drakes tend to be, how shall I put it, promiscuous. My boys and girls are "practicing" daily. The eggs might be fertile, but so long as you collect them daily, you don't need to worry about ducklings in the cold season, unless you are specifically interested in doing so and incubate them yourself.

We eat most of our eggs. Occasionally I see a blood spot and pull that bit out, but generally, I don't taste any difference
between fertile and not.

Best of luck with your venture.

Liz

I'm trying to think of a way to word my question better. If I see an egg in their coop or the flower bed what are the chances it's fertile? Or is there no way to really know? Will the hen sit on them wether or not they're fertile? What are the chances of survival if they tried to hatch eggs in the winter? Cuz if they're not good I think I'd pull them, I won't be able to handle the heartbreak

My mom does have an incubator (where these guys hatched) but she doesn't have much luck at all with it so maybe it's not a good one. She's only gotten my 3 ducks and 2 chickens out of dozens of eggs. Thanks so much for your advice. I just want to be prepared for the day I find an egg
