  • Description:
    This contest is open to all BYC members, who have broody hens this time of the year. Once again this will be done on the honor system, so please only post broody hens (any fowl) they don't have to be sitting on eggs, just broody. Take a picture of you hen on the nest. Post it on thread, after set date, on Tuesday​
  • Who: OPEN TO ALL OF BYC, NOT JUST THE HATCHERS
  • Start: Midnight EST, December 11 th
  • End: Midnight EST Tuesday, December 18th
  • Prize: 6 + eggs from mrheinz77 Exhibitation Line Breeds

The broody is a Buff Bantam Cochin named Butterscotch. She's a stalwart broody that I gave some turkey eggs to this summer. She hatched them 100% !

I have to tell you all a story about her... I posted on another thread while I was having issues, but I want to re-tell it here, just so you can fully understand what a wonderful Mommy she is...



See the black and yellow baby under her left wing? She was hatched under another broody, Butterscotch (B). Between B and I, we almost killed her. All 6 of Prim's babies had hatched 2 days before. We were all patiently waiting for B's eggs to hatch. One evening, I noticed that one had pipped. I picked it up to check, because I was impatient and inexperienced. I put it back under B with her 5 other eggs and went to do barn chores. When I came back, there was no progress, and I was worried. I should have left it alone, but I couldn't help but pick away a tiny bit of shell. I put the egg back with B and she stepped on it and crushed it. Now the shell was smashed with the chick still inside! I picked it back up and picked away a bit more shell. I was panicking at this point and had no idea what to do, so I put it back with B and tried to occupy myself by candling the remaining 5 eggs. They were all dead! I broke them open, and there was very little development. I went back to the egg and the chick seemed to be struggling. I tried to make sure there were no veins, and continued to pick away shell. The chick was about half out of the shell when I put her back with B... B promptly attacked the chick, pecking at her neck and almost throwing her! I grabbed the little chick away from B and held it in my hands thinking "What have I done?? Now what am I going to do?" My incubator had just arrived that day and wasn't set up. There was no way I could get it heated up in time to save this chick. I felt certain I had just killed it. Out of desperation, I went over to the brooder wher Prim was happily tending her 2 day old babies. I gently laid the chick on the floor of the brooder in front of Prim and asked her if she could save it. Prim gently pushed it a bit with her beak, then stepped over her and settled over it. She pushed her other chicks away and started preening herself. As I watched, she eventually let her babies back underneath her. It was late, and I was drained, so I told my son there was nothing more we could do and left them there. I barely slept all night as I thought of that poor little chick. I went out in the morning, completely expecting to find a dead chick. Instead, I found an adorable black and yellow ball of fluff peeking out from under Prim with the other 6 chicks! She is the best Mommy EVER!!!
 
Here's one of my broody hens. She is pretty determined to hatch, but I'm not going to let her hatch this time.

My broody BLRW will not give up her eggless spot!! Funny thing is..the EE shoving her face under her...hasnt laid an egg in a year and didn't that day either! Lol
