The Duck Thread

Hephaestus died last night. I woke up around 5 or 5:30 in the morning, and Zeus was screaming. I went in, and she was already stiff. Zeus is a lone duckling, and I have no money for another two weeks. I've already looked, anyway, and can't find any ducklings other than Muscovies and Pekins, and neither one of those are a good fit for my backyard at the moment. ):

Once again, Zeus has his teddy bear back. He seems content enough with it, plus attention from all of us. I'm definitely gonna try to integrate Zeus into the flock ASAP.
OMG what happened to Hephaestus? What a cool name..

I didn't mean right now, Miss Lydia. I just meant as soon as he was able.
Well you didn't say that, I had all kinds of visions of poor little Zeus staked out in the back yard being tortured by the adult ducks.

What does it mean when a duck keeps twitching her wings? We have been getting bad short storms because of a big storm (hurricane?) in the Gulf. As we were corralling and locking up the chickens, ducks, and geese in the chicken coop (it's off the ground and very dry and sturdy) there was thunder and lightning and everyone was agitated. But the duck doing the wing twitching thing was Ebony, and she was standning over the small ducklings, in the nursey, looking at the rest of the chickens and geese while she did it. She actually walked over to stand in the middle of the ducklings and started twitching. Was she just upset because of the storm, or was she trying to protect the ducklings? I have never seen that behavior before,

I have to say, I'm loving my ducks so much! We had been waiting for over a month for Ana and Elsa (anconas) to hatch and when they were finally ready Kristof (Muscovy) was five days old and no one had taken her yet :( I love are anconas, but Kristof is so mellow and is the only one who will just sit while I reach in and let me pick her up. Ana and Elsa like to be close to me, but don't like me reaching in the pick them up and only like me petting them when they want me to. We are so happy with all of them, but thrilled we got Kristof. My son (four yrs old) told me we should change Kristofs name to Olf because she likes warm hugs :) I'm going to get meal worms and start hand feeding those as well as shredded carrots to all of them to help the anconas be a little calmer about being pet and held.

It's normal behavior, not sure the meaning behind it, some say it's a feather out of place and it tickles them, LOL

It's normal mine do it after bathing or rain .

Don't know if I mentioned how we are get getting pounded by storm bands a big storm in the Gulf is sending to us. We had a couple injuries when a storm blew up quickly while I was trying to get my chickens, ducks, and geese under cover in the pouring rain. A crack of thunder sounded overhead and my ducks and geese panicked. Most of the chickens had been put away. 1 goose was trampled by the other geese and is doing fine after some rest. My duck, Daisy however gashed her middle toe on her left foot and got a small cut over her left eye. Since we were under flood warnings and my duck/goose coop was already flooded I put everyone in the chicken coop that is 3 feet off the ground. The chickens started pecking Daisy's scratch, so I tried to apply Blu-kote to prevent that and infection. It did not go as planned. I used the spray on her foot, and the dauber on her face. She struggled so hard that my porch, my husbands chin and shirt, my shirt and hands are all purple. And Daisy? Well she managed to smear the purple all over her face and wing. I think she is trying to start a new duck fashion. What do you think of my purple duck?

Was able to snap the pic this morning as we are supposed to be clear skies till this afternoon. I'm monitoring the weather closely so we don't get surprised again.
