OK I noticed that one of my chickens had crapped on my front porch and it had a long white looking worm on top of it...I don't usually look at chicken crap lol, but my daughter noticed the worm so does anyone know what it is and how does chickens get worms and what do I need to do...I am not sure which chicken did it...I would appriciate all the help I can get.

Could you tell whether the worm was flat or round? This is important, as there is only one wormer I am aware of (albendazole - - NOT fenbendazole, so it's confusing at some co-ops and stores) that takes care of tapeworm, and it is actually licensed for cattle. The rest will treat various roundworms, but won't get the tapeworms and you'll still have a problem.

I'll grab my worming chart from the house tonight and post what I found in this thread. In the meantime, someone else who has this info handy may well post.

Anyone else with worming info/experience out there??? Have you found the same info I have with regard to the tapeworm/roundworm issue?

The worm was round and white. How harmful is this to chickens and also I have puppis around and I wanna know if there is any chance the puppies can catch these worms.

I have some puupy wormer..do you think I could give some to my chickens?

There the eggs are consumed by other chickens/ picked up by wild birds/animals and by other mechanical means and took to other farms nearby.
wazine 17 will kill round worms, wazine is only effective against roundworms.. I always use a broad spectrum wormer, often times a bird has more than one species present and the harshness of all chemical wormers are about the same. I rotate between these three valbazen(albendazole) safeguard(fenbendazole) and levamisole..And no the worms from the chickens wont infect the puppies..Whats the active ingredient in the puppy wormer?
 
Pin e Grove, thanks for telling us all more about your worming regimen ~ very helpful. Do you have heavy breeds? What is your dosage? Do you administer orally? Ever noticed any side effects?

Also, if you are eating eggs from this chicken, you will have a waiting period before you can eat the eggs again (if you are treating with something other than all natural ingrediants).

Worms are found in the ground and I find it helpful using all natural products to maintain my birds health against worms. ie. I put apple cidar vinegar in the water, use an all natural power in the feed (purchased through Murray McMurray Hatchery), and I occassionally give my birds crushed pumpkin seeds (aka Pepita).

Is it ok to eat the eggs they lay when the chickens have worms?

The active ingredient in the puppy wormer is piperazine, it is round wormer for puppies, will it hurt my chickens?

My vet told me to do this because I had cecal worms in the ground and the other birds will get the worms too.

Some people don't agree but I guess you have to make this your personal decision to do this or not. You could always wait and see what their droppings look like. If you ever get mushy, brownish droppings... you probably have some kind of worm problem. (this is what I've seen in my flock). And it's smelly too..... pee-yoouuu
