Hi Everyone.

I've been working on a Wichita style coop for my wife and kids to raise chickens in, and I've been documenting the build on my YouTube channel. If anyone's interested, I'd be interested in any feedback I can get, since I've never built anything like this before.

And frankly, I could use the motivation of having people watch and prod me to completion.

Here's a link to the playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQw9cxYOeq51qm-6WfPpgPvG85POgE26M

I welcome your comments. If you see me making any glaring errors, please say something.

Best Regards,

New update posted today. I managed to get the nesting boxes framed and the run area completely framed. We're on vacation this coming week, so I won't get to work on it for at least a week.

Once again, if anyone sees any glaring mistakes, I'd love to hear about it.

Episode 5:

Hey, thanks!

I really just forgot to keep updating this thread, but the coop is complete and we're starting to get eggs now. I still have a few things to do, mainly convenience items and some comfort items for the chickens, but we're happy with the result.

You'll notice as you go through the videos that I sort of designed as I went. I had a target in my head, and worked toward that.

I spent the $5 to WC family and am dissecting the sketchup model and docs he sent - I'm an Architect with Fed. gov't and so i'm very linear in how i'm approaching building this coop - on furlough now so lots of time on my hands scouring youtube, backyard chickens, the books I've bought - everything , everywhere to learn. funny I've designed homes and commercial buildings , but this little coop has me all worked up. anyways, how many hens for you ? what type breeds? location - i'll look at your profile but just thought i'd ask - i'm most likely looking at 7 hens all different breeds from My Pet chicken. thanks again for sharing !

We have six hens, two Ideals, two Rhode Island Reds, and two Barred Rocks. We're in South Georgia, so the winters aren't too bad. My two little girls love checking for eggs, and my 2-year-old boy loves sitting in front of the door and watching the hens.

The chickens are really my wife's. I'm going to start beekeeping next spring.

Very nice. I have three kids and they're all excited 13, 10 and 6. Hens will be all of the family's but of course they are being "claimed" and "named " by each of them - the wife too! funny things this "urban chicken" phenomenon. Thanks again. Look out for our progress photos in late winter/early spring.
