Egg withdrawal period for Penicillin??

Hi-

We've been teating our hen Olympia with Pen-G (~ 1/2 cc daily for 5 days). The bottle is labeled for cows, swine etc and states a 48-hr withdrawal for milk and 10 days for slaughter.

I'm concerned about how long we should not eat the eggs, though.

I did find this OLD web page (1998) that states:

So now I'm worried.... can we NEVER eat her eggs again!?!?!​
 
That is just because the FDA hasn't approved it for that use. Commercial egg producers have little need to treat illness in their birds. They just cull if the birds dont die first. The FDA cares little about backyard flock owners, I assume.
 
I would hold the 10-14 days and then you should be fine. When a product is not FDA labeled/approved for an animal they say those kinds of things to cover themselves.
 
Honestly, I would say a week is fine. To my memory, penicillin is one of those drugs unlike sulfer drugs that goes though the body really fast. When penicillin first came out, they reclaimed it from the urine of patients that it was administered to partially due to the drug's expense to make and due to a high clearance rate which meant lots of doses.
 
Thanks folks. I asked our state vet and he guessed the same time range (10-14 days) so that's what we'll do. It's killing us to throw away her eggs, though!
