I was at the feed store yesterday and was looking at the baby chicks. There were several that had what looked like poo on their butts that was harden on. this is the first time I had seen this. what causes this? What do you do for it? are they OK?

Sounds like they have pasty butt. Hopefully someone will clean them off, it can be life threatening. Iv'e heard that stress can cause it and if they are too hot. A few of mine had it when i first brought them home but after a few days it seemed to go away. I did put save-a-chick probiotics in the water. Here's hoping for the best for those little guys!

I just got a batch of 30 new chicks. Probably 10 have the pasty butt. i tired to clean it with a damp rag, but could not remove it. It did come away a bit. They are seperated into 2 tubs each with a lamp. Definately worse on the smaller brown chicks. Their tub may be hotter. I did raise the lamp.

Any suggestions as to how to clean them? This is my second batch. I only had one chick before with the poo stuck and it came off on its own.

I get a warm wet paper towel and hold it on the bums for a bit. Most the time it comes loose some times you may have to pull some fuzz. If that doesn't work try and hold there butts in a cup of warm water until the poo is saturated. Then give them a little dry off.

Try holding them under warm running water, vent end only. It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it. It might take a minute but the poo will wash away with the pressure of the water. If there is some that is still stuck use a paper towel to gently remove it. You can always put them back under. A paper towel to pat dry and you should be good to go. Some people use olive oil to help prevent it from sticking again. I didn't have any issues with our first group but the second group there were about 10 out of 39. I added sugar to their water and I really think it played a part. After a couple of days everyone was good to go and I didn't have to worry about it anymore.

Two of my babies had a real problem with pasty butt for the first few days. Twice a day I would use a cotton pad with warm water to gently wipe it off. Wet the pad. Wipe the butt. Wet the pad. Wipe the butt. Sometimes (especially in the beginning) it would take 5+ minutes, I remember thinking it was never going to come off but it did. I also gave them plain yogurt twice a day and increased the amount of probiotic in their water.

From my understanding it is pretty common and happens when they are young because they lack the probiotics they need to make solid poop. Since their poop isn't the right consistency it sticks to their vent and the down around it, dries and hardens.
