My Coop
My Coop
I am going to be buying my chicks this weekend going to probably get 6 Americaunas at a local feed store. So i have a little bit of time before they get introduced to the coop.

This is what i am thinking please let me know what you think.

  1. I am thinking of building a 4x6 coop at about 6 foot tall with a ladder door in to floor (attached to a rope) to let them out in the morning. so the coop will sit up about 4 feet off the ground.
  2. The the run will go under the coop and extend 12 feet past the coop and be about 4 foot tall. ( So we are looking at 4x16x4) the top of the run would open up like a door for cleaning purposes.
  3. I am thinking about putting in 3 nesting boxes about 7in from the floor of the coop then a roosting rod 2 foot from the floor.
  4. Covering the inside of the coop with sand and in the run i would have grass.

(Some of the obvious i did not say like access door to the coop in the back and windows in the side)

Probably going to go with a tin roof and rough cut lumber.

Thoughts? Things i am missing or overlooking?

Thanks helping me make my first coop last.

So here's how she goes.

The original plans of the coop were 4x6 and will all this wonderful discussion of "Chicken Math" I decided to talk the wife into a 6x8 coop instead. With a little more money than expected spent here is how she goes.

So with the help of my father and a couple really good friends (I supplied the booze) we where off building this wonderful 6x8 chicken coop. We are building pretty much like a pole barn. Because my carpenter buddy has been dying to build a pole barn. So its a Pole Coop so in the since you can pretty much call it a Peep Show.

Ok I know a little cheesy.

Started with the roof framing.

Now its time to frame in the walls. The Front side is going to be double doors for easy cleaning and above those will be a window covered in chicken wire and a shuttle to go over it in the winter.

The back is getting all framed in. Hopefully she will get finished today but so far I am pretty please with the way she is going. I don't have any chicks going in anytime so I will just have the basis done for now.

Thoughts?
