Possibly egg bound hen?

I have a 5 year old Buff Orpington hen, and the last few months I've noticed that about once every couple of weeks she lays an egg with no shell. It's just the skin around the egg white and yolk! I've been giving my chickens crushed egg shell every couple of days, and she is STILL laying these eggs.

Yesterday she spent the entire day in the next box. She would come out a couple of times to eat and peck around, then she would go right back into the nest box. Yesterday evening she finally laid the egg, and once again, it had no shell.

Today she is doing the same thing as yesterday. She's been in the nest box most of the day. She was on the roost for a while as well and the whole time she was up there she was squatting. I was feeling around her vent and it's not hard, but it's kind of bulging. She won't eat or drink today, because she wants to get the egg out.

I've never had this happen before and I don't know what to do! Is she egg bound, or is it just her age?? I've read that baths help, but will that work when the egg doesn't even have a shell? Any help would be VERY appreciated!

Might be her age, five is old for a heavy breed. Could also be egg bound, but im not positive. Run a sink full of hot water, and sit her in it. Keep her in hot water as much as possible, and lube her vent with Vaseline. Hive her finely crushed egg shell and put a vitamin supplement in her water. Keep updates!

Okay I'll try the warm bath! How warm should the water be? As warm as you would make it for yourself, or warmer? I've never given a chicken a bath before.

Alright. I'm filling the bath tub for her right now. I went out to check on her just a few minutes ago. She was up and moving but she still hasn't passed the egg. Hopefully the bath helps!

I've been doing some "experiments" (see my avatar, lol) with mine as I seem to bee have more than my fair share of egg laying trouble lately... I'm a very lazy person, so the bath thing is what I do last, but I know it can help. However, what seems to work even better is giving them a human calcium pill. My OEGB gets 500mg, larger birds get 1000mg and turkeys get 2000mg. Each time I have done this I have seen them pass the egg within 2 hours.

I gave her the bath. I only kept her in there for 20 minutes because she started to get frustrated and flap her wings. Otherwise she really enjoyed the bath. You were right about the pooping too. She dropped a huge pile of poop on the tile floor of the bathroom while I was drying her off.

When she was almost completely dry I brought her back out to the coop. At first she was just standing there preening her still wet feathers. Then she started eating some of the food. I'm just about to go out and check on her again. I just wanted to post how it went first :)

Okay I'll try that! Thank you :D
